HPU, Chaminade start tournament tomorrow

The Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team will take on Central Washington in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Women's Volleyball Division II Pacific Regional tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the RIMAC Arena at UC San Diego.

HPU (20-3) drew the perfect Huskies (26-0) despite being the champion of the Pacific West Conference. Chaminade (16-6) earned a spot on the other side of the regional bracket and will play Cal State LA (17-11) in the first round.

HPU's matches will be broadcast live on 1500-AM.

Three softball players earn honors

UH Wahine softball players Tracie Uchima, Stacey Ritter and Dena DePompa were named 2004 All-American Scholar-Athletes yesterday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Uchima, who earned the award for a third-straight year, was the top UH softball student-athlete, earning a 3.965 grade-point average while majoring in animal science. Ritter earned a 3.690 while majoring in family resources, and DePompa, a pre-kinesiology major, earned a 3.540.

Top seeds advance

No. 1 seed Vladimir Pavicevic and second-seeded Zack Fleishman advanced in the Honolulu Futures Pro Circuit yesterday at Ala Moana Tennis Center.

Also advancing in the tournament was fifth-seeded Robert Yim along with unseeded players Mat Cloer and Scott Oudsema. The tournament continues today.
