Service academy
applications due

Case will consider candidates
who meet his Dec. 1 deadline

U.S. Rep. Ed Case (D-Rural Oahu, Neighbor Islands) is accepting applications until Dec. 1 from qualified students who are interested in receiving his nomination to various military service academies.

Applicants must be residents of the 2nd Congressional District. Students may apply for nominations to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy or U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for classes entering in summer 2005.

Each year, members of Congress are entitled to submit nominations for a few vacancies allotted to each member. This process ensures that a wide range of students from across the nation may attend these academies. The final decision as to whether a nominee is accepted for admission lies with each academy.

Applicants must meet five basic eligibility requirements as of July 1, 2005: 17 to 23 years of age; U.S. citizen; not married, pregnant or legally obliged to support a child; children of parents or legal guardians who have bona fide legal residence in Hawaii; and legal residents of the 2nd Congressional District.

Completed applications must be received in Case's Honolulu office no later than Dec. 1. Case will conduct personal interviews and announce his nominations by Christmas.

Applications and information are available online via Case's Web site at www.house.gov/case or by calling Yvonne Kearns at his office at 541-1986 on Oahu, 935-3756 on Hawaii; 245-1951 on Kauai and Niihau, 242-1818 on Maui, 522-0160 on Molokai and 565-7199 on Lanai.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not participate in the congressional nominations. Individuals may apply to the academy by writing to the Director of Admissions, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT 06320.
