Willows holds Winter
Beer Festival tonight

AFTER THREE years at the Waikiki Shell, it looks like the Great Diamond Head Beer Fest is pau.

I've been getting e-mail and phone calls about this event for months, asking if it was still going to take place. Sadly, a spokesperson informed me last week that the festival was "on hold, and its future is uncertain at this point."

But Kelly Gillis, Kyle Nakayama and the rest of the staff at the Willows have come through in the clutch. The restaurant will host a Winter Beer Festival tonight from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Only a dozen brews will be sampled, a far cry from the over 100 that were poured at the Shell, but the $25 admission will also score you free pupus and live entertainment from Kalaeloa. Call 952-9200 ...

YOU WOULD think that the members of Go Jimmy Go would be relaxing as much as possible these days, after spending the last few months touring the mainland.

And for the most part, that's what it looks like they're doing -- except for Fernando "The Love Machine" Pacheco. This guy loves to work, whether it's with the rest of GJG or fronting his other band, Pimpbot.

For the next couple of months (or until it's time to resume touring), Pacheco has enlisted the help of bandmates Rylan Yee and Tom Coleman to play as The Bender Trio. The three started their first gig a week ago, playing Tuesday nights at Chiko's Tavern on McCully Street.

"Our first show was a blast," said Pacheco via e-mail. "I think a lot of people came out to see Pimpbot be mellow for once."

The talented trombone player also demonstrated a new signature move last week, blowing his horn and playing the drums -- at the same time! Something you've got to see to believe ...

OTHER observations: The new Wal-Mart store on Keeaumoku is pretty impressive, but why close the place at midnight? Most townies I've talked to are not happy with having to drive to Kunia to get their late-night shopping done ... What's up with all the soda companies releasing new flavors lately? Mountain Dew and 7-Up were recently joined by Pepsi, when the popular cola unveiled a new "Holiday Spice" edition of the beverage. Tastes like someone put a pack of cinnamon-flavored gum in the bottle ... Best of luck to punk rocker Otto, frontman for The 86 List. The band called it quits on Friday after one last gig at Club Pauahi, due to Otto's health problems and the fact that he's closed up shop and is moving to the mainland ...
