Kalani Simpson Sidelines

Maybe we shouldn’t
talk about this one

OK ... um ... the game.

Well, it was very, very exciting. A little bit of a disappointing performance, but somehow Boise State always comes up with a way to win every week.

What?

Oh.

Friday's game.

Well, it was a great one ... for a while. Mililani was very impressive, at first. Then, Kahuku pulled away like always. Typical Kahuku playoff game. But I did enjoy the "All-Katoosh Team" package OC 16 put together.

What?

The UH-Fresno State game?

You want to talk about the Hawaii-Fresno State game?

No.

No, I don't want to.

You can't make me write this column.

It's too depressing.

I don't want to write about this game.

I think I may have some idea of the way KKEA play-by-play man Bobby Curran must have felt when he said, "And 'Fan Phones' are up next."

That was as depressing as it got. Nobody even disagreed with each other, on the radio postgame call-in show. Everybody was just too heavy-hearted to even be angry.

I could only listen for a minute. I had to turn it off before I had the urge to kill myself.

If this keeps up they're going to have to change the number to 1-800-DNT-JUMP.

REMEMBER WHEN UH football wasn't big and high school football was king?

How many of you switched channels in the second half with me and watched the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship game?

OK, OK, OK, positives:

» UH did a good job of running the clock in the second half.

» No missed extra points.

» UH scored a touchdown this time (two!).

» ESPN's Sean Salisbury called June Jones the best coach in the history of the Hawaii program.

But seriously, you have to like the fact that Michael Brewster ran for more than 100 yards. And Chad Owens broke Gary Allen's school record for career all-purpose yards. Good for Chad; he deserves it. And that's not just a positive for him, but, to steal a line, good for the whole state.

It's good that we remember Gary Allen again, and have an occasion to revive lost memories of those good old days, and recall that this program does have tradition and history and pride.

That needs to be remembered. Today, more than ever.

So what the heck happened? How does it get to this point?

» Negativity.

» It's kind of hard to concentrate with all those fireworks going off.

Sorry. Really, what can you say about a game like that? What can you say about 70-14?

Nothing that anybody wants to say.

It wasn't even competitive.

It wasn't even competitive, and this is twice now.

What will June Jones say about this one?

I don't know.

I don't care.

Do you? Would anything help?

The latest rallying cry has been that he's doing all the same things now that he did back when he was everyone's hero. Everything is the same as it's always been.

That's just football. The ball bounces. You do what you believe is right and sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn't.

Which, yes, there is some truth to that. But somehow I don't think that was Leigh Steinberg's pitch at the negotiating table.

So, now, UH will keep doing the same things this week. Luckily, Idaho is coming to town, and Idaho is not very good.

And you know what will happen. Idaho will get befuddled on the road. UH's defensive blitzes will work like a charm. There will be 40-plus points scored and the run-and-shoot will be back.

Wheee.
