BYUH wins Asia-Pacific Classic

The host Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team defeated the Fiji Invitational Team, 98-45, to win the Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic yesterday on the BYUH campus.

Freshman point guard Paul Peterson scored 23 points, draining five 3-pointers and posting six steals to lead the Seasiders to an easy victory.

Fiji's Marcus Whippy helped his team by grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds and scoring 11 points.

The Seasiders advanced to the championship game with a 108-34 rout of the Tahiti National Team on Friday. Senior Jake Chrisman led the Seasiders with 16 points in 20 minutes.

BYUH will host Winona State, Northwood and Hawaii Pacific in the BYUH Tournament that runs from Thursday to Saturday.

Aggies take 4 from 'Bows

The Rainbow Wahine Tennis Invitational was canceled due to rain at the UH Tennis Complex yesterday.

The Aggies won all four doubles games played before the rain fell. The Hawaii team of Paige Mainor and Lauren Fitzgerald, ranked 24th in the nation in the final ITA rankings last season, came the closest to victory, losing to Lauren Walker and Tiffany Clifford, 8-6.

Earlier in the day, Arizona won all eight matches against Texas State.

Rainbows take 17th at cross country regionals

Dana Buchanan placed 45th among nearly 200 runners to lead the University of Hawaii women's cross country team to a 17th-place finish out of the 35 teams at the NCAA West Regionals in Fresno, Calif., yesterday.

Finishing in 21 minutes, 52 seconds, Buchanan was one of three Rainbow Wahine to place in the top 100. Sabrina Reeve (22:23, 67th), Chantelle Laan (22:34, 78th), Kelly Young (23:34, 131st) and Danielle Binns (24:05, 153rd) made up the rest of the Hawaii squad. Also competing for the 'Bows was Heather Scott (24:22, 163rd).

Stanford and Arizona State finished first and second, taking the two automatic bids into the NCAA Championships. Cardinal Alicia Craig easily won the event in a time of 20:03. Runner-up Amy Hastings of ASU finished 11 seconds behind Craig.

This meet marked the end of the 2004 season for Hawaii.

Odesnik, Tecau in Waikoloa title game

Fourth seed Wayne Odesnick of the United States and sixth seed Horia Tecau of Romania advanced to the finals of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Futures Men's Professional Tennis Tournament yesterday in Kailua-Kona.

Odesnik and Tecau will play for the tournament championship today at 9 p.m.

With his serves exceeding 130 mph, Tecau topped Robert Yim 6-4, 6-0. Odesnik defeated fellow American Alex Kutnetsov 7-6 (6), 6-2.

The winner of the championship match takes home $1,950 and 18 ATP points.

Local athlete named finalist for award

Moanalua senior Emily King will be honored as the first Hawaii student to become a finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

There will be a special presentation at Moanalua High School tomorrow at 9:30 p.m. for King, who won a $1,000 donation for her school.

King, who has earned varsity letters in cross country, track and field, swimming and water polo, was one of 12 finalists to be selected out of nearly 15,000 seniors nominated.

Finalists were selected on the basis of academics, community service and athletics. One male and one female will be selected as national winners on Dec. 10 in New York.

Davis, Lumpkin among QB club speakers

Dr. Christiane Christ of the Great Aloha Run in-training clinic and Warrior football defensive coordinator George Lumpkin and special teams coach Mouse Davis will be the guest speakers at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m., with the program beginning at noon. The public is invited.

Sea Warriors sweep Vulcans

Barbara Martin and Flavia Brakling combined for 24 kills and Hawaii Pacific geared up for the regional tournament with a 30-18, 30-21, 30-20 win over Hawaii-Hilo at Hilo yesterday.

The Sea Warriors (20-3, 9-1 PacWest) will find out their regional seed next week. The Vulcans close coach Julie Morgan's second season 4-21, 1-9 in the conference.

Brakling and Martin helped HPU hit .336 and limit Hilo to .076.
