Mufi taps team
with business emphasis

The mayor-elect names two
to lead his search for a staff

Mayor-elect Mufi Hannemann announced yesterday that his transition team will be headed by businesspeople D.G. Andy Anderson and Christine Camp Friedman.

How to apply

» Anyone interested in applying for a position with the Hannemann administration should submit a cover letter and resume by Nov. 26 to:

Hannemann Transition Office
City Hall Annex
550 S. King St., 2nd fl.
Honolulu, HI 96813

Hannemann, who vowed on the campaign trail to run the city's government like a business, has chosen a transition team that reflects that view.

The team oversees the selection process of the mayor's Cabinet and key staff, including 17 department heads. Hannemann said he hopes to make decisions on those positions by mid-December.

"I want people who will work hard. I want a Cabinet that will reflect the diversity of Oahu," he said.

Anderson is a self-made millionaire businessman, restaurateur and developer. His political experience includes two terms in the House and four terms in the Senate representing Windward Oahu. Anderson also served as the city's managing director under Frank Fasi.

In 1968 and 1972, Anderson unsuccessfully ran against Fasi for the mayor's job. Anderson also made three unsuccessful runs for governor.

Hannemann said that Anderson knows business and "the ins and outs of putting together a Cabinet."

The mayor-elect also noted Camp Friedman's strength in business.

Camp Friedman, the current chairwoman of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, is the managing director of Avalon Development Co. LLC, a Honolulu-based real estate development and acquisition consulting firm.

Hannemann said that five search committees will be formed and that each committee will be assigned to fill the needs of three or four city departments. The committees will screen candidates, interview top applicants and recommend three candidates to Hannemann for his consideration.

The heads of the five search committees also reflect Hannemann's business view of running government. They are:

» Paul Yonamine, executive vice president of Asia/Pacific, BearingPoint , which was formerly part of KPMG's consulting arm;
» Joseph Pickard, president of Environet Inc., a Honolulu-based firm that provides civil and environmental engineering services;
» Meredith Ching, vice president of Alexander & Baldwin Inc.;
» Liz Ho, area field services director for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees;
» Marc Tilker, president and chief executive of Marathon Group LLC, which was formed in 2003 when C. Brewer & Co. divested assets.

Hannemann urged people to apply for positions "even if they didn't vote for me."
