Smith wins regional again

BYU-Hawaii's Chelsea Smith repeated as champion at yesterday's NCAA Division II West Regional in Bellingham, Wash.

Smith, a junior, finished the rainy and muddy 6-kilometer course in 21:43, 24 seconds ahead of second-place Karen Dickson of Seattle Pacific. Smith will defend her national title at the NCAA championship on Nov. 20 in Evansville, Ind.

BYUH finished ninth in the team standings with 234 points.

On the men's side, BYUH finished 11th with 240 points while UH Hilo was 15th with 377.

Rainbows complete shootout with wins

The University of Hawaii men's and women's swimming and diving teams both won their dual meets on the second day of the Big West Shootout yesterday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.

The Rainbow Warriors, ranked No. 20 in the country, defeated No. 17 Washington (76-27), UC Irvine (80-24) and UC Santa Barbara (89-14) to bring their record to 6-0.

The Rainbow Wahine knocked off Washington (79-32), UC Santa Barbara (96-15), UC Irvine (82-31) and San Diego (97-15) to improve to 7-1.

Rainbow Wahine divers Qiongjie Huang and Rui Wang won their events in the University of Southern California Trojan Diving Invitational yesterday.

Vulcans fall to Mustangs

For the second straight day, Western New Mexico University was able to defeat the Hawaii Hilo women's volleyball team in Silver City, N.M. , 30-16, 30-20, 31-33, 30-27.

The Vulcans fell to 4-19, 1-9 in the Pacific West Conference, while the Mustangs improved to 20-10, 5-4.

Quarterback Club to honor Owens and Prince

Guest speakers at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club will be former Alabama kicker Peter Kim and Hawaii football coaches Ron Lee and Rich Miano.

Warrior receiver Chad Owens and Rainbow Wahine volleyball player Victoria Prince will also be recognized as October's Male and Female Sportsperson of the Month.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Pagoda Ballroom in Honolulu. The program starts at noon.
