Funk and Jacobsen sign up for golf challenge

Fred Funk and Peter Jacobsen will be among six pros playing in the 2005 First Hawaiian Bank's Pro-Junior Golf Challenge on Jan. 11 at Waialae Country Club.

Joining them will be U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen and 2002 Sony Open champion Jerry Kelly. The challenge is the kickoff event for the Sony Open to be held that week. Funk and Jacobsen are making their debuts in the challenge. Admission to the event is free.

'Bows sweep at shootout

The University of Hawaii men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept the competition at yesterday's Big West Shootout at Irvine, Calif.

The Rainbow Warriors defeated UC Irvine (106-34), UC Davis (124-16) and Air Force (124-16). The Rainbow Wahine downed UC Irvine (106-34), UC Davis (116-24), Air Force (121-19) and Pepperdine (119-19).

Andrew Affleck finished first in the 1,650 free and 200 fly while teammate Justin Wilcox won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

The Rainbow Wahine took the top five spots in the 200 free with Cassie Hunt leading the way, followed by Melanie Schlanger, Bache' Atkins, Jessica Affleck and Joy Symons.

The shootout finishes today with both UH teams competing in the championship pool.

Huang takes first: Rainbow Wahine diver QiongJie Huang won the 3-meter springboard diving event at yesterday's USC Trojan Diving Invitational in Los Angeles.

Huang scored 519.60 points over 11 events, edging out Stanford's Ashlee Rosenthal who scored 511. Fellow Rainbow Wahine Rei Wang finished fifth with 440.15 points.

The meet concludes tomorrow with the 1-meter and springboard events.

Kahuku alum in Hula Bowl

Two former Kahuku players will play in the Hula Bowl.

Aaron Francisco, a safety for BYU and Chris Kemoeatu, an offensive guard at Utah, signed their acceptance letters to play in the all-star game yesterday. The Hula Bowl is set for Jan. 22, 2005 on Maui.

Seasiders fall to Cougars

BYU-Provo defeated the BYU-Hawaii men's basketball team 85-70 in an exhibition game last night in Provo, Utah.

Jake Chrisman led the Seasiders with 25 points and Michael Stowell added 16. Mike Hall led BYU with 16.

It was the first meeting between the schools.
