Island chef cooks up a way
to get his ballot counted

David Koerner, a chef at St. Francis Hospital, takes voting seriously. David and wife Debbie return from San Francisco today. He went there to receive a kidney transplant, getting the organ from Debbie. When doctors in the Bay Area kept him longer than expected, he called City Hall here and requested that an absentee ballot be sent to him by express mail. He received it Monday night, filled it out, was driven to S.F. airport Tuesday, Election Day, and sent it to Honolulu. David's sister-in-law, Lisa Josephsohn, picked up the ballot package at United Air Cargo and rushed it to Honolulu Hale in time to be counted. ...

California Pizza Kitchen in Kahala, the chain's top-grossing restaurant, has reopened after two months of renovation. CPK co-founder Larry Flax is here for the festivities. Next week, 25 percent of pizza sales during the entire week will go to the Variety School for children with learning challenges and autism. ... HPU cheerleading team captain Lori-Ann Amodo was American Cheerleader magazine's Cheerleader of the Month for October, winning a $1,000 scholarship. ... Photographer and painter Kim Taylor Reece was inducted in the Long Beach City College's Hall of Fame Oct. 8. ...

Lynn, Borges, Baltazar book La Pietra jazz gig

Shari Lynn, Jimmy Borges, Gabe Baltazar and Fascinatin' Rhythm will have things swinging with jazz standards from the '30s and '40s on La Pietra's Great Lawn on Nov. 21. Shari will also sing with her Savoy Sisters, Rose Marie Barbee and Annie MacLachlan. The grounds open for picnics at 5 p.m. and music starts at 6. Tickets are $30; call 924-7515. It's a benefit for La Pietra School. Hiroshi Tagami and Michael Powell will hold an art show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at La Pietra on Nov. 20 and 21. No admission charge for art lovers. ...

Star-Bulletin Food Editor Betty Shimabukuro appears on "Hawaii Goes Fishing with Ben Wong" the week of Nov. 14 on Oceanic's OC 16 at various times. Ben will show Betty how to clean and filet a papio, something useful for those who don't want a fish on a dish staring back at them. Betty will run a story on it in Wednesday's Food Section. ... Abstract paintings by Kristen Zambucka drew guests' interest at Jany Cataldo's birthday party Oct. 23.
