2 more schools make 'adequate progress'

Two more schools -- Roosevelt High and Ahuimanu Elementary -- made adequate academic progress for 2004 under federal guidelines, raising the total to 147 out of 280 Hawaii schools.

The two had appealed their status after preliminary results were announced last month. Final data released yesterday showed that 52.5 percent of Hawaii schools achieved "Adequate Yearly Progress," up from 39 percent in 2003.

The federal No Child Left Behind law requires each school to meet up to 37 benchmarks, including reading and math scores and a 95 percent participation rate on each test by various groups of students.

Roosevelt and Ahuimanu were among 24 schools to appeal and were the only ones that succeeded in changing their status. In both cases, the dispute centered on calculations of student participation.

Complete results for all schools are posted by the Department of Education at arch.k12.hi.us under "No Child Left Behind Reports."

Cancer operation on Inouye's wife goes well

U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye said the operation to remove a cancerous tumor from his wife Maggie's large intestine was a success yesterday.

In a press release, Inouye said his wife is "resting and doing well" at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. For the first time in 50 years, Inouye was not present in Hawaii during an election day and instead was at his wife's side because of her condition.

"Doctors said the operation was a success, and that Maggie is resting comfortably," Inouye said.
