Kamehameha
up to 3 after
beating St. Louis

For another week, the top two teams in the Star-Bulletin football Top 10 are from public schools.

Kamehameha's ascension from fourth to third in the poll released today, however, indicates a change in perception for the media voting panel.

The Warriors' 18-0 win over 18-time defending Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Saint Louis opened a lot of eyes. It wasn't just that Kamehameha won soundly; the Warriors did it without a key defensive player, Mana Lolotai.

Kamehameha gained a measure of inspiration when Jayson Rego tossed the crutches and ran at running back despite an ankle injury.

Kahuku remained a unanimous No. 1 with all seven first-place votes. The Red Raiders outlasted Aiea 32-8 on Friday in the Oahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinals.

Mililani, a 41-21 winner over Kailua, also advanced to the OIA semifinals. The Trojans remained at No. 2.

Behind Kamehameha, Lahainaluna also made a jump forward. The Lunas blanked Maui 28-0 and moved to No. 4, their highest ranking ever.

Saint Louis slipped two spots to No. 5.

Iolani needs a win over Punahou on Saturday to have a shot at the ILH championship. The Raiders have already clinched the league's Division II state-tournament berth.

Hawaii Prep cracked the poll for the first time this season after a 24-14 win over previously unbeaten Hilo. HPA is the favorite to claim the Big Island Interscholastic Federation's D-II state tournament berth.

Hilo remains the top seed in the BIIF's Division I playoffs.
