Help is needed with alien plant removal

WAILUKU » A nonprofit group is looking for volunteers to remove non-native plants and do some maintenance work during a three-night stay in Haleakala National Park.

Friends of Haleakala National Park is sponsoring the Nov. 11-14 service trip to the crater where volunteers will stay at the Paliku cabin.

Grant is awarded for seniors' housing

A Maui nonprofit has been awarded a $1 million federal grant to help build low-income housing in Kihei for seniors.

Housing corporation Hale Mahaolu got the funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant will help build a proposed senior housing complex in Kihei, which will have 54 units and serve seniors over 62.

"Our senior citizens in Maui County need and deserve high-quality, affordable housing," said U.S. Rep. Ed Case (D-Rural Oahu, Neighbor Islands), who announced the grant, "especially now when housing continues to be a critical need for them."

Boys & Girls Club receives financing

The Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii's Nanakuli Clubhouse will receive $500,000 in federal funds to build a new facility on Hawaiian home lands.

U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) said the planning and construction of the building will be financed under an Economic Development Initiative Special Project grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Akaka said the new facility will "provide a safe and healthy environment for young people during after-school hours and summer vacation."

Alleged gunman is arrested in kidnapping and car theft

A 26-year-old downtown man was kidnapped in the Kapiolani area, thrown into the trunk of his car and robbed of his car early Saturday.

Police said a man in his 30s, armed with a handgun, approached the victim at 12:30 a.m. yesterday as he was leaving a restaurant at 1901 Kapiolani Blvd. The suspect allegedly forced him to drive to Makiki, police said.

Police said the suspect allegedly took the victim's jewelry and money and forced him into the trunk of his car and drove around for a few hours, then let him out.

As the suspect was driving the victim to get more money, the victim jumped out of the car and ran. The suspect then drove off with the car.

Later that morning, the victim saw the gunman at the Pagoda Hotel and called police. The other suspect was also located at the hotel.

The suspects, ages 31 and 49, were arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery and kidnapping.

Uncle held in alleged assault with metal pipe

Police arrested a 46-year-old man Saturday after he allegedly assaulted his nephew with a metal pipe.

Police said the suspect struck his nephew, 14, on the arm with the pipe at a home on Iwi Way at Wilhelmina Rise.

The 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and abuse of a household member. Charges are being sought.

Police seek 3 suspects in gunpoint robbery

Police are seeking three suspects who allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint at 12:01 a.m. Saturday in Wahiawa.

The 28-year-old Wahiawa man had just gotten off the bus and was walking home when three men approached him; one of them was armed with a handgun, police said.

Police said the suspects took the victim's property and fled in a white van.

The gunman is described as a man in his 20s, 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, wearing a jersey and bluejeans.

The second man is 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 140 pounds and wore a white T-shirt and bluejeans. The third man stood 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds.

The suspects remain at large.

Toddler on life support after possible assault

Kauai police are investigating an assault-related case involving a 2-year-old boy who is on life support at Kapiolani Medical Center. Further details were not available and no arrests had been made.

Arson is suspected as boat is set afire

Police are investigating a boat that was set on fire Saturday in Kailua.

A 55-year-old man called police to report that a boat was set on fire by an unknown person at about 8 p.m. while it was parked in front of a home at 610 Iliana St.

Man dies in hospital after fight last week

A 49-year-old man died Saturday at the Queen's Medical Center from injuries he suffered in a fight that occurred Thursday.

Police said the victim and a suspect in his early 20s were involved in a fight that occurred on Kuhio Avenue and Duke's Lane about 9 p.m.

Police opened a murder investigation on the suspect, who faces charges of second-degree murder.

No arrests have been made at this time.
