Paul Ogata gettin’
busy in La-La Land

BLINK AND you missed it: Comedian Paul Ogata slipped away (again) to Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago, this time to tape an appearance at the Improv comedy club for future use on AOL Broadband and MobiTV (video-on-demand via Sprint PCS mobile phones).

Ogata is getting a handle on all the jet-setting he's doing between here and Hollywood, and this time managed to squeeze everything into a single weekend so he wouldn't miss any on-air time at 102.7 Da Bomb with morning partner Kid Leo.

The trip also yielded an opportunity for yet another return trip -- producers of The WB's "Steve Harvey's Big Time" are interested in having Ogata on as a guest, which would air during prime time under a redesigned talk-show format ...

BLINK AND you missed this, too: Honolulu was a stop on the "Original Butt Sketch World Tour" last week.

Dallas-based artist Krandel Lee Newton was in town for the National Pest Management Association's annual convention, where he provided free sketches of peoples' backsides.

He must be doing something right -- the former engineer changed careers in 1987, and has since traveled around the world while showing off his unique talent.

Newton claims to have drawn over 200,000 rear ends, including those of John Goodman, Leeza Gibbons, Alex Trebek and Vanessa Williams ...

THE GANG at Philip Paolo's keeps plugging away with reggae music on Saturday nights at Restaurant Row.

If you didn't make it to the "Trinity Reggae Concert" last weekend, you missed out on performances by the Ionz, Irie Souls and Stir Crazy.

Coming up, Most High and the Ionz return for another Saturday party, while THC and Humble Soul play a special Halloween concert on Sunday. Call 585-8142 for more info ...

LOOKING AT the smiling faces of Keahiwai on their latest CD, "Dangerous," the duo doesn't appear threatening at all.

But the songwriting skills of Mailani Makainai and Lei Melket can do some serious damage -- the ladies penned every song on the album (producer Aaron Kimura co-wrote two tracks), and they keep getting better with each release.

Although I had to wait until the final track, "I Found You at Last" is my favorite song, although I did like the addition of Ben Vegas on guitar to "Now That You're Gone."

Also impressive is Makainai and Melket's commitment to working with established musicians like Jon Porlas, Pierre Grill, Jon Yamasato, Daniel Ho and Maila Gibson. Some of the laid-back tracks had me drawing comparisons between them and the ladies of Na Leo ...
