[ STATE HOUSE ]

50
Kaneohe-Kailua

Edward P. Clayton Jr.

Democrat

Age: 45 Job: Administrative secretary, the Queen's Medical Center, Department of Security Services

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I know that many of the decisions we make in the next few years will shape our Hawaii of tomorrow and I want to be a part of the process that shapes our future. ... I am keenly aware of many of the problems which face our ... community.

What would you do to combat the state's crystal methamphetamine abuse epidemic?

I believe that the answer to Hawaii's drug problems are twofold -- prevention and rehabilitation. First, we must reach our youth and educate them on the danger of illegal drug use. We must provide them with the knowledge and the will to "just say no." What can the Legislature do to improve Oahu's traffic congestion?

I believe the Legislature can take a multi-prong approach to Oahu's traffic problem. We can only build and maintain so many roads ... I believe that the state must work with the city to fund, construct, maintain ... state-of-the-art mass transit systems.
