Restoration of flows to Maui streams urged

WAILUKU » Two Valley Isle groups have asked a state commission to restore "unused flows" in several West Maui Mountain streams, pending a petition against a couple of landowners in central Maui.

Maui Tomorrow and Hui o Na Wai 'Eha yesterday filed a complaint with the state Commission on Water Resource Management, charging that Wailuku Agribusiness and Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. are wasting millions of gallons of diverted water from the streams at Waihee, North and South Waiehu, Iao, and Waikapu.

EarthJustice attorney Kapua Sproat said the two groups want immediate relief.

The two groups filed a petition with the commission on June 25, seeking to increase the flow standards for the streams.

Wailuku Agribusiness President Avery Chumbley said the firm is not wasting water and he's saddened that EarthJustice is using the news media to argue its case.

Hawaiian Commercial General Manager Stephen Holaday said the company has used water efficiently, investing millions of dollars in drip irrigation, and expanded its acreage as it began farming former Wailuku Sugar lands.

Coast Guard rescues 2 from Hawaii sailboat

SEATTLE » A Coast Guard helicopter plucked two men from a disabled 55-foot sailing vessel from Hawaii 200 miles off the Washington coast yesterday.

The men, who were not injured, were flown to the Coast Guard station at Astoria, Ore., by an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter.

The men had apparently picked up the three-masted schooner Kamaa from Kawaihae, on the Big Island, and were sailing it to Victoria, British Columbia, when they ran into 30-foot seas, Coster said.

The vessel's engine was disabled and the fo'c'sle -- a portion of the upper deck -- was split, but the ship was not taking on water, the Coast Guard said.

They were rescued after activating an emergency transmitter.

Coster identified one of the men as Robert Wallace and said he was from Massachusetts.

Coster said he did not know the man's hometown. The other man was not immediately identified.

Police seek 2 suspects in Maili shootings

Police were looking for two suspects yesterday after two Kailua men were shot in Maili.

Police said the incident began as an argument during a phone call between a Kailua man, 32, and one of the suspects, a Maili man, 19. The two agreed to fight, so the Kailua man drove to the Leeward side from Kaneohe with a 27-year-old man, police said.

As they approached the suspect's house on Paakea Road at about 12:30 a.m. yesterday, the suspect shot at their vehicle, police said.

The 32-year-old got out of the vehicle, and another male, 17, of Waianae, confronted him with a rifle, police said.

The teenager with the rifle fired three shots, police said. Two shots hit the 32-year-old in the stomach, while another hit the 27-year-old in the ankle, police said.

The 19-year-old suspect then fired a shot into the air from a hand gun, police said. He and the 32-year-old man began fighting, as officers approached, police said. Both suspects then fled.

The victims were taken to the Queen's Medical Center in good condition, police said.
