Punahou holds on
to No. 1 ranking

Punahou collected all 20 first-place votes and retained its No. 1 ranking in the Star-Bulletin Girls Volleyball Top 10 today.

The Buffanblu improved to 10-0 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu action with straight-set wins over Hanalani and Sacred Hearts over the weekend.

The ILH's second-place team, Kamehameha, moved up to No. 2 in the Top 10 after outlasting Word of Life and Hawaii Baptist. The Warriors escaped from Hawaii Baptist with a 21-25, 25-21, 25-22 win Saturday.

Moanalua, which suffered its first loss of the season Thursday at McKinley, was relatively unpunished by the voting panel of media and coaches. The Menehunes slid to No. 3, but still lead the Oahu Interscholastic Association East race. Moanalua is tied with Kahuku at 9-1, but has the tiebreaker advantage thanks to a win over the Lady Raiders.

Rounding out the Top 10 are Kahuku, Hawaii Baptist, Kalani, Aiea, Iolani, Kamehameha-Hawaii and Kamehameha-Maui.

Punahou garnered all 13 first-place votes in the Boys Volleyball Top 10 to remain No. 1. The Buffanblu (8-0) won their only match last week over Hanalani.

Iolani and Kamehameha follow Punahou in the rankings, giving the ILH the top three spots.

The rest of the poll is relatively static, except for the final two spots, where Hana and Damien switched positions. Hana (7-0), now at No. 9, hosts a crucial match with the Maui Interscholastic League's only other unbeaten team, Molokai.

The regular-season champion of the MIL will earn a state tournament berth.
