Hawaiian Cement parent
buys quarry on Maui

North Dakota-based Knife River Corp., parent of Hawaiian Cement, has acquired Pohakulepo Quarry on Maui for an undisclosed price.

Hawaiian Cement, which is operated independently but is part of Knife River's family of companies, will operate the quarry, which has annual revenues of about $2 million.

Hawaiian Cement has helped build Hawaii's infrastructure since 1959 by supplying cement through a network of terminals on all the major islands. The company supplies concrete and aggregates on Oahu and Maui, and Hawaiian Sandman products statewide.

"The Pohakulepo Quarry will nicely complement our operations in Hawaii," said Terry Hildestad, president and chief executive officer of Knife River.

A representative from Hawaiian Cement could not be reached for comment regarding the sale's impact on employees.

Knife River is among the nation's largest publicly traded construction materials companies.
