Father of soldier killed
in Iraq to speak at several
isle churches

A California man who became an anti-war activist after his son was killed in Iraq last year will speak at Oahu churches this weekend.

Fernando Suarez del Solar will speak on "The Human Cost of War" at 6 tonight at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave. He will also talk on the subject at the following locations:

» Tomorrow: 9 a.m., Trinity United Methodist Church, 1716 Komo Mai Drive, Aiea.

» Tomorrow: 4 p.m., Waipahu United Church of Christ, 94-330 Mokuola St.

» Tuesday: 12:30 p.m., Leeward Community College, PS 201-B.

The talks are open to the public.

Suarez del Solar has spoken against the American invasion of Iraq since his son, Jesus, a Marine, was killed by a U.S. cluster bomb in March 2003. He and other American military families visited Iraq last December. He is a member of Military Families Speak Out and founded Guerrero Azteca, a group offering counseling for Hispanic families with members in military service.

His visit, which will also include talks in several Oahu schools, is sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee Hawaii Area Program, the Ad Hoc Committee for Peace and Phi Theta Kappa.
