Reeve debuts with top-10 finish

Sabrina Reeve made her debut with the Hawaii cross country team yesterday, finishing seventh in the Triton Classic at La Jolla, Calif.

Reeve ran the 6K course in 22 minutes, 46 seconds to lead the Rainbow Wahine to a fourth-place finish, its best showing of the season. Oklahoma State won the meet, followed by Portland and UCLA.

Chantelle Laan (23:14), Dana Buchanan (23:29), Kelly Young (24:15) and Danielle Binns (25:21) were Hawaii's other scorers.

Smith wins another meet: Brigham Young-Hawaii cross country runner Chelsea Smith won the Hawaii Pacific Invitational yesterday, running the 6K course in 21:12.

The Seasiders won the team title with 24 points behind Smith's effort. Smith has won every collegiate event in the state this year.

UH-Hilo's Germaine Ortiz won the men's race by cruising 10 kilometers in 32 minutes, 34 seconds to beat his nearest competitor by nearly a minute and give the Vulcans the crown.

Seasiders come out of Claremont unbeaten

Vanja Kalabic and Kevin Van Haaster each scored three times to lead the Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team to 13-3 win over Chapman at the Claremont Convergence at Claremont, Calif., yesterday.

The No. 13 Seasiders also beat UC Santa Cruz 8-2 yesterday and will face Chaminade October 16 in Laie.

Goalie Peter Caley stopped 10 shots in the two games for the Seasiders, who improved to 9-2 this year and won all four games in the tournament.

Kop set to defend OCC Senior title

Five-time champion Wendell Kop is expected to play in the Oahu Country Club Senior Men's Invitational tomorrow.

Russ McGarry, Mervin Matsumoto, Art Costas, Vince Goo, Tom Goodbody and Shigeru Matsui are some of the 70 golfers expected to take a run at Kop. Play starts at 7 a.m. tomorrow and Tuesday.

BYUH wins on the road

Yu Chuan Weng buried 15 kills and Beth Robertson added 10 as the Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team swept Montana State-Billings 30-23, 30-21, 30-27 last night at Billings, Mont.

The Seasiders improved to 8-7 with the win while the Yellowjackets dropped to 10-6 a day after MSUB took a conference game off the Seasiders.

Beth Robertson had 10 kills for BYUH and teammate Lilly Tufuga added in nine. Lesina Funaki led BYUH with 14 digs and 39 assists.

Olivia Munro led the Yellowjackets with 14 kills. Former Kahuku graduate Alberta Letoa had 14 digs for the Yellowjackets.

Chaminade sweeps: The Silverswords defeated UH Hilo 30-17, 30-28, 30-20 Friday night in a PacWest game at UHH Gymnasium.

Valasi Sepulona had 16 kills to lead Chaminade (6-1, 11-3). Christina Cooley's eight kills led the Vulcans (1-5, 4-11).

Spots still available for Celebrity Classic

Amateur playing spots are still available for next week's Sports Celebrity Golf Classic featuring former NBA stars like Moses Malone and George Gervin and members of the UH Fabulous Five, including coach Red Rocha.

The tournament is set for Thursday at Luana Hills Country Club.

Other NBA stars committed to the tournament include Artis Gilmore, Connie Hawkins, Maurice Lucas, Joe Bryant and more.

Rocha will present the first "Spirit of the Fabulous Five" award to a local coach or athlete during the dinner.

The event will also assist local charities. More information on the tournament is available at 792-9333.

Waimea Bay paddling challenge set

The Blue Makua's Master Waimea Bay Challenge will be held Saturday at Haleiwa Beach Park.

The men will paddle nine miles starting at 9 a.m. Women and mixed will go 4.5 miles starting at 11 a.m.

The divisions are: men/women junior masters (40 years plus), senior masters (50 plus), golden masters (55 plus) and mixed (40 plus).
