Jazz at Atherton

Pianist Les Peetz, bassist Lou Benanto and drummer Scott Shafer will perform a tribute to jazz trios of the past, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at KHPR's Atherton Performance Studio.

The trio will also be exploring original territory and some classical sources, among them Brahms, Debussy and Bartok. Trio members know the repertoire is somewhat unusual and hope it will also be tuneful.

Admission is $10 for HPR members and $12 for non-members. The studio is at 738 Kaheka St. Call 955-8821 for reservations.

Sit in on 'Aloha Shorts'

KIPO, Bamboo Ridge Press and HTY are pooling their talents in the fourth live recording session of "Aloha Shorts" stories at 7 p.m. Monday at Atherton Performance Studio, Hawaii Public Radio, 738 Kaheka St. (across from Daiei).

Ray Bumatai, Monica Cho Coldwell, Walter Eccles and Keith Kashiwada read stories by Jeffrey Carroll, Stuart Ching, Yokanaan Kearns, and Cedric Yamanaka.

Globetrotters return

The Harlem Globetrotters will be returning to Hawaii after a long hiatus to entertain sports fans of all ages at the Blaisdell Arena at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30.

The Globetrotters are the world's most enduring and winningest basketball team, having performed before more than 120 million people in 117 countries since their first game in 1927. Inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002, followed by an induction into the Black Sports and Entertainment Hall of Fame and the World Sports Hall of Fame, they have maintained its position as the most liked and most recognized sports team in the world in the Q Ratings.

The Globetrotters recently concluded its most successful season in the organization's 78-year history, selling out 42 venues and playing before nearly 1.5 million fans in 45 states and three Canadian provinces.

Tickets for the Globetrotters go on sale at 9 a.m. Oct. 16 at the Blaisdell Box Office and Ticketmaster locations. Tickets are priced at $10, $19.50, $25 and $35, with applicable service charges. Lani-Kailua plant sale

The Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle will hold a plant sale 9 to 11 a.m. tomorrow to benefit the Women's Community Correctional Center.

Some of the offerings for sale at the Kailua Elementary School parking lot, next to the public library on Kuulei Road, include areca palms, manila plams, bougainvillea, yellow allamanda and more. Come early for the best selection.

Plants were cultivated by the students in the Environmental Sciences Vocational Training program at the WCCC under the guidance of instructor Juan Arcena, former head gardener for the Sheraton Hotels in Waikiki.

Frog drawings wanted

Honolulu Botanical Gardens is sponsoring a Frogs and Garden Critters Art Contest with prizes awarded in five age categories for three-dimensional creations.

Contest rules and registration forms are available through Nov. 24 at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe and Foster Bonatincal Garden in Honolulu. Deadline for entries is 4 p.m. Nov. 27.

All entries will be displayed at the Ho'omaluhia Visitor Center from Dec. 4 through 30.

Special Finds at Pier 1

The newest Pier 1 store, opening 10 a.m. Oct. 16 in Pearl City, will offer a line of furniture and accessoreis called "special Finds" merchandise, including full-sized upholstered furniture, hand-card armoires, large-scale vases and hand-touched wall decor.

Twenty percent of net sales during grand opening weekend will go toward benefitting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Hawaii Affiliate and child and Family Service.

Also, Pier 1 will donate $1 to the Hawaii Komen affiliate for every Race for the Cure registration received onsite.

The store, at 1000 Kamehameha Highway, will provide 19,556-square feet of home furnishings and accessories.
