Soprano Mary
Chestnut stars with
Symphony at La Pietra


Soprano Mary Chestnut was a hit at "An Evening in Provence" featuring the Honolulu Symphony on La Pietra's Great Lawn Saturday evening. Besides her excellent vocals, she acted out robot-like doll movements on "Doll Song from Tales of Hoffman." A full moon came into view as Mary sang a selection from "Romeo and Juliet." The orchestra was conducted by assistant conductor Joan Landry. Earlier, the picnic crowd had to break out umbrellas or head for cover as rain fell shortly before dark. But it blew over and Lynne Johnson danced out on the lawn with arms raised signaling it was all clear, and a rainbow appeared. Aside from the rain, it was a beautiful moonlit picnic evening. Barbara Cox Anthony was the sponsor. She attended with husband Garner Anthony. Garner, Punahou Class of '48, was the high school tennis champ in the late 1940s ...

The "Hawaii" cast and KHNL are teaming up and will do public service announcements urging people to vote, because of the dismal turnout in the primary ... "Hawaii" regular Peter Navy Tuiasosopo is the cousin of Oakland Raiders' backup quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo who had an outstanding preseason with the Raiders ...

Aussie women paddlers party at Compadres

Soon after winning the Na Wahine O Ke Kai canoe race from Molokai to Oahu yesterday in record time, Australia's defending champion Mooloolaba team showed up at Compadres to party. Manager Kellie Harris was on duty. She has reason to celebrate as well because Kalaeloa, made up of her husband, Les, and Taz Vegas, recently released their "Let the Good Times Roll" CD ...

Jany Cataldo is the latest isle resident to report she ran into former Kahala Mandarin G.M. Seamus McManus when she spent two nights recently at Calistoga Ranch in California's Napa Valley. Jany raved about the resort that Seamus runs. It was featured in W's September issue ...

Tracy Pflueger's new, luxurious Kahala home was the site of a double birthday celebration for Diane Ng and Carol Kaili Sunday. All three women are with Coldwell Banker ... Learning his wife Bernadette was pregnant with their third child gave Aaron's G.M. Al Souza III another reason to whoop it up on his recent 37th birthday ... It wasn't too surprising that Raquel Guss, 15-year-old Punahou sophomore, won the recent Miss Junior Teen Hawaii contest. Her mom, Dede, is a former Mrs. Hawaii. Raquel's dad is Barron Guss ...
