Wie 14th at Waikaloa Open,
8 behind winner Phengsavath


WAIKOLOA, Hawaii » Fourteen-year-old Michelle Wie closed with a 1-over-par 73 yesterday to finish the 54-hole Waikoloa Open at 6-over 222.

Wie, a sophomore from Punahou School, ended in a three-way tie for 14th place, eight strokes behind winner Joe Phengsavath.

Wie is slated to play at the LPGA's Samsung World Championship next month in Palm Desert, Calif.

Phengsavath started the third round at the Waikoloa Village Golf Club on the Big Island in a tie for fourth place. He fired a 3-under 69 to overtake second-round leader Jerry Mullen and beat him by one stroke.

Kevin Hayashi, Regan Lee and Casey Nakama tied for third place another stroke back.
