Sam Choy credits
employees for success
at Diamond Head

Modest Sam Choy, instead of taking a bow for his culinary expertise, credited his employees for his success at the ninth anniversary party of his Diamond Head restaurant Wednesday. "Having good employees, that's the magic," Sam said, as singer-guitarist Brother Noland was wowing the large crowd. Sam said the key is his 80 employees at Diamond Head "understanding the true aloha spirit from the mind, heart and aina." Sam and partner James Lee turned the event into a benefit for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii. Tables were piled with food prepared by Chef Elmer Guzman and his staff and there were wine stations. Noland drew applause singing his compositions and knocking out songs in the style of Gabby Pahinui and Richard Kauhi. He had the crowd join in on "American Pie" and told stories about growing up in Kalihi-Palama. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Jerome Koko who was there with his brother John, both Makaha Sons. Other entertainers included the mellow Kaleohone duo and house singer-guitarist Kimo Todd. Emcee was that rascal, Champ Kaneshiro, who had 'em roaring with his jokes ...

ABC's 'Lost,' filmed here, is fast-moving thriller

Judging from Wednesday's opening episode, Hawaii and ABC have a winner in "Lost." The hour-long, fast-moving thriller was over before I knew it and had me wanting more, just as the hot "24" series does. The show, filmed here, is tightly written with little time wasted. It opened with an airliner crash on an island beach and Matthew Fox, portraying Jack, a doctor who survived, aiding passengers. He has Evangeline Lilly, playing Kate, sew up a cut to his side with an ordinary sewing needle and thread. It's a strange way to start a relationship but it seemed to make a connection. Things get spooky when survivors hear a giant creature in the jungle. The unseen beast gets the plane's pilot. I'll stay tuned ...

Hawaii's former Miss Universe Brook Lee is here shooting footage for her syndicated "Pacific Fusion" show that airs on KHON Sundays at 4 p.m. She interviewed the "Hawaii" cast yesterday. It wouldn't hurt to offer Brook a guest shot on "Hawaii." The series' Aya Sumika was picked as one of the "Fresh Faces to Watch" on the tube this fall by E! Entertainment, and Us magazine named Ivan Sergei one of the "Hunks of Fall TV." People pictured Eric Balfour in the Sept. 20 issue in a goofy suit with patches, called him "Raggedy Andy" and put him on its Worst Dressed list ...
