Hussein to tour schools

Mbarak Hussein of Kenya, a three-time winner of the Honolulu Marathon, will tour local schools next week to speak to and answer questions from students.

He will be at Iolani on Monday in sports and literature classes, room W-208 from 8:59 to 9:41 a.m. and from 1:32 to 2:14 p.m.

Tuesday he will be at the Liliuokalani Elementary School cafeteria at 9 a.m. and at Hanahauoli School at 12:45 p.m.

Hussein will be at the Le Jardin School at 8 a.m. Wednesday and meet with the Niketown running club at 6 p.m.

Next Thursday finds Hussein at Ala Wai Elementary School at 1:30 p.m.

His tour concludes Oct. 1 with a visit to Waikiki Elementary School at 8:30 a.m. and a stop at Central Middle School from 12:28 to 2:15 p.m.

He also is scheduled to run with several school cross country teams during the week.

BYUH water polo stays at No. 14

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's water polo team remained No. 14 in the Collegiate Coaches Water Polo poll released yesterday.

This is the third consecutive week the Seasiders have been No. 14. However, they did drop one point in the voting, getting 35 points this week.

A new computer power ranking formula, called the Freeman Ratings, places the Seasiders ninth nationally, one spot ahead of UC San Diego. That makes BYUH the highest-ranked NCAA Division II team in the Freeman Ratings.

The Seasiders defended thier ranking with an 18-4 win over Chaminade at Laie last night.

Vanja Kalabic led the scoring for BYUH, torching the Silverswords for five goals. The Seasiders had 11 swimmers score in the rout. BYUH takes on the Hawaiian Masters on Saturday in Laie.

Supercross classes scheduled

There are several classes and various skill levels available for persons interested in learning more about Supercross racing Saturday at Hawaii Raceway Park.

The classes start at 4 p.m. The cost is $25 for the first class, $15 for each additional class. For more information, call 597-9020.

Maui Roughwater Swim set for Sunday

The Valley Isles Masters Swimmers' 20th annual Maui Roughwater Swim is Sunday. The 1.7-mile race starts at Keawekapu Beach and finishes at Polo Beach.

The event is open to all age groups. The late registration fee is $25. Entry forms are available at all county pools.

The race is a benefit for Mana'o Radio, 91.5 FM, a nonprofit local station.

Literacy golf a big success

The 11th annual Marriott Links to Literacy: A Benefit for the Hawaii Library Foundation golf tournament reached the $100,000 mark Friday, breaking last year's total by $15,000.

The foundation raises funds to supplement public library programs not covered by the state budget.

More than 200 golfers participated in the event at the Ko Olina Golf Club. Lance Lee, John Tsukada and Brian Tsuruda, of Aloha Shoyu Company, won the event with a combined net score of 49.2.

Rainbow baseball fall camp

Hawaii head baseball coach Mike Trapasso and his staff will hold a select, two-day camp for high school players, ages 16-18, Oct. 23-24, at Les Murakami Stadium from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The camp is an intensified instructional camp that will cover all aspects of baseball and will include a professional-style workout.

The cost is $100. Checks, made payable to University of Hawaii baseball camp, should be mailed to the UH baseball office, 1337 Lower Campus Road, Honolulu, HI 96822. For more information, call 956-6247.

Raceday awards available

Raceday is an organization that funds endurance athletes who demonstrate a financial need. It is a national nonprofit organization that makes financial and equipment grants quarterly.

Raceday receives proposals and nominations from people and organizations requesting grants or scholarships. Raceday then determines who to give the awards to.
