Heffernan wins U.S. sumo title

Kena Heffernan of Hauula won the open division of the U.S. National Sumo Championships in Las Vegas to claim Grand Champion honors on Saturday.

By winning the event held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino, Heffernan qualified for the World Championships in Riesa, Germany, next month and the World Games in July.

Heffernan, a teacher at Punahou School, weighs 250 pounds and defeated wrestlers in the 450- to 500-pound range to win the open division.

Rainbow Wahine open tennis season at UNLV

Hawaii's women's tennis team opens its fall season this weekend at the Nevada-Las Vegas Invitational.

The Rainbow Wahine begin play Friday in a tournament that will feature players from UNLV, Louisiana State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Minnesota.

The 2004-05 Wahine feature four seniors who represent coach Carolyn Katayama's first recruiting class.

Rainbow Wahine split for Stanford, BYUH meets: The Hawaii cross country team will follow up its win in its own UH Big Wave Invitational last weekend with a road trip to Saturday's Stanford Invitational.

A second UH squad will run in the Brigham Young-Hawaii Invitational that same day in Laie.
