Hawaii moves up a spot in volleyball poll

The Hawaii volleyball team moved from seventh to sixth in the latest coaches' poll yesterday, earning 1,330 points and passing UCLA.

The Rainbow Wahine (8-0) are one of seven unbeaten teams in the poll and play Pepperdine Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Pepperdine was ranked 18th last week but dropped out in this latest poll.

Minnesota received 43 first-place votes and is in the top spot, followed by Southern California and Washington.

Kabalis honored by PacWest

Chaminade outside hitter Kahala Kabalis was named the Pacific West Conference's player of the week yesterday for helping the Silverswords in a pair of wins.

Kabalis put down 20 kills in a win over UH-Hilo and 18 against Brigham Young-Hawaii. She is third in the conference in kills per game after leading the category last year.

The Silverswords will put their unbeaten start on the line Friday when they take on conference favorites Hawaii Pacific at McCabe Gym.

Wie playing at Waikoloa Open

Michelle Wie will be one of more than 200 golfers playing in the Waikoloa Open golf tournament this weekend.

The tournament, which is in its 31st year, is played on the Waikoloa Village Golf Course, a layout that Wie has never tested in a competitive event.

Wie will play in the championship flight. John Hearn of Indian Wells, Calif., will return to try to defend his title from the phenom.

Play begins Friday at 6:30 a.m. and spectators are welcome.

Sandvold comes up short in Surfski

Hawaii's Mark Sandvold covered 18.3 miles in 2 hours, 28 minutes and 4 seconds at the U.S. Surfski championship at San Francisco yesterday, but two athletes beat him to the finish line.

Olympic champion Greg Barton won the race with a time of 2:20:22, followed by former U.S. marathon kayak champion Robert Clegg a minute later. Hawaii's Steve Kelly joined Sandvold in the top five with a run of 2:35:59.

June Jones Show hits the road

The public is invited to attend two tapings of OC16's June Jones Show at the Waikoloa Kings' Grill on the Big Island.

The shows are scheduled for Saturday and Oct. 30. Doors open at 10 a.m. and run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Coaches' basketball clinic coming up

The Hawaii Basketball Coaches' Clinic, featuring new Hawaii women's coach Jim Bolla, new Hawaii Pacific men's coach J.D. Barnett and Chaminade men's coach Aaron Griess, is scheduled for Saturday at Damien Memorial High School gym.

The clinic runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will focus on drills for offense and defense. Other coaches include Hall of Famer Howie Landa from UNLV and UH men's assistant coach Bob Burke.

Two mini-sessions will be conducted by official Lloyd Hisaka on new rule changes and the latest points of emphasis by officials for the upcoming season. Also, Kevin Chang, a sports medicine specialist and certified strength and conditioning specialist from Straub Hospital, will involve the coaches in his on the court presentation on how the proper jumping and landing techniques help curb ACL and other athletic injuries.

Road Runners to hold Schofield 25K Sept. 26

The Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club will hold the Schofield 25K race Sunday at 5:30 a.m. at Stoneman Field at Schofield Barracks.

It is the third race of the Michelob Ultra Marathon Readiness Series.

Individual race fees are $10 for members and $7 for MPRRC members. Call 295-6777 for information.

Kailua Basketball Association starts 36th year

The Kailua Basketball Association is starting its 36th year of serving boys and girls in Kailua ages 5-14. Registration forms are available at the Kailua Rec Center or at www.kailuabasketball.org.

Tour de Cure set for Nov. 14

Bike riders of all ages and skill levels are sought for the 2004 Tour de Cure set for Nov. 14 to raise money for the Hawaii office of the American Diabetes Association.

Riders will choose between two routes -- 15.5 miles or 31 miles -- that start and end at Kapiolani Park.
