LATIN NAME
Artemisia mauiensis

HUI KU MAOLI OLA

Description: Dense shrubs about three feet tall spreading three to four feet across. Its striking foliage is a reflective silvery green produced by tiny hairs that cover the top and underside of leaves. This characteristic is referred to scientifically as being tomentose. Each leaf comprises many fine branching segments, some about one millimeter wide. The flowers are cream colored and arranged in clusters but aren't as eye-catching as the plant. The plant gives off a strong aroma similar to that of sage.

Distribution: There are three native species of Artemisia found in Hawaii: Artemisia australis is found on all islands, usually on cliff faces; Artemisia kauaiensis is found only on Kauai; and the plant pictured, Artemesia mauiensis, is found only Maui, specifically on Haleakala's slope and in the crater. The plant is silvery because it needs to reflect all the intense sun it gets at that high altitude.

Cultural uses: Hawaiians use the pounded leaves of all species of Artemisia to treat asthma. The leaves also look nice as lei but don't last long.

Landscape uses and care: These plants look great planted around larger rocks or as accents around darker foliage plants such as hibiscus, uki'uki or ti leaves. Full sun and well-drained soil is best for them; however, don't overwater. Remember they come from dry, arid and sunny Haleakala. A good soaking every two to three days should be fine.

The plants are available at the Home Depot for about $9 but usually sell out quickly.
