[ STATE SENATE ]

18
Waipahu

Clarence K. Nishihara

Democrat

Age: 61 Job: Retired public school vice principal Past: School administrator, special education teacher.

What qualifies you to be a state senator?

Over the past 30 years, I have served my community in leadership positions on numerous civic and community organizations, including the Waipahu Neighborhood Board, Waipahu Community Association ...

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Public education. As a retired teacher and administrator, I know it takes the concerted effort of teachers, administrators, parents and other members of the community to bring any meaningful improvements to our public education system ...

Do you support or oppose Gov. Linda Lingle's plan to break up the statewide Board of Education? Explain.

I do not support the proposed seven local school boards ... how would they have the proper authority ... to become autonomous? Unless one considers the issues of power sharing ... one could face seven fragmented boards ...
