Michael Kahikina

Democrat

Age: 54 Job: Chairman, House Human Services and Housing Committee; member, House Education Committee

What qualifies you to be a state representative?
My love and compassion for my community, state and country.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district, and what would you do about it?

Housing, homelessness and inexperienced teachers. Legislate for more affordable rental housing, and restructure the tenure system for teachers to even out in experienced and inexperienced teachers assigned to schools.

Do you support or oppose Gov. Linda Lingle's plan to break up the statewide Board of Education? Explain.

Oppose. I believe (that) to improve schools and improve student achievement, (we must) improve the teacher and environment (classroom) with the needed textbooks and equipment. Not the board structure!
