Pacific Hts.-Punchbowl

Sylvia Luke

Democrat

Age: 37 Job: Attorney since 1995; state representative since 1998 Past: Pauoa and Kawananakoa PTA

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

As a representative for the last six years, I worked hard to diversify the economy, improve our education system and provide safe and clean neighborhoods. I will continue to work hard to provide a better quality of life for our residents. ...

What is the most pressing issue facing your district, and what would you do about it?

Currently, large housing and/or commercial projects are being proposed in Pauoa, Pacific Heights and Nuuanu. In addition to infrastructure concerns, new development may increase the chances of rockslides. ...

Do you support or oppose Gov. Linda Lingle's plan to break up the statewide Board of Education? Explain.

I have spoken to many teachers about this. Virtually every one of them was opposed to breaking up the BOE. They stated that adding more school boards would lead to more bureaucracy and take away money from classroom teaching. ...

Robert "Bob" Tom

Republican

Age: 48 Job: Educator -- Hawaii Job Corps (Waimanalo); businessman -- president, Heavenly Paradise Corp.

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I bring a fresh perspective to the Legislature. I am an educator with at-risk youth who understands the need for true education reform. I am a businessman who understands the needs and frustrations of doing business in Hawaii.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district, and what would you do about it?

Crime and drugs. These two go hand in hand. I want stiffer penalties for repeat offenders and giving law enforcement the tools necessary for real crime prevention.

Do you support or oppose Gov. Linda Lingle's plan to break up the statewide Board of Education? Explain.

I believe and support the governor's plan of creating local school boards with the decision and money to go to the principal. Smaller school boards can establish and concentrate on getting more parent involvement.
