Sea Warriors move up in poll

The Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team jumped three spots to No. 9 in the CSTV/AVCA Division II Coaches Poll released yesterday.

The Sea Warriors are 6-1 and face unranked Brigham Young-Hawaii on Sept. 14 in Laie.

BYUH (6-2) dropped out of the poll after being ranked 18th last week. Chaminade (5-2) received 15 points.

Matsui earns spot in Senior championship

Shigeru Matsui beat David Ishikawa by two strokes to win a Senior Amateur qualifier at Oahu Country Club yesterday.

Matsui shot a 74 to earn the spot in the USGA Senior Championship Oct. 9-14 at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.

Ishikawa finished with a 76 to take the first alternate spot, followed by Mervin Matsumoto at 77 and Barry Schnabel at 78.

Local cross country teams head to Big Island

Cross country teams representing five local colleges will compete in the UH-Hilo Invitational on Saturday on the Big Island.

Brigham Young-Hawaii, Chaminade, Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific and host UH-Hilo are set to compete in the women's meet.

BYUH won a similar meet last week, claiming first place in the Chaminade Invitational in Laie. Hawaii finished fourth in the meet.

UH-Manoa hosts the next meet, the Big Wave Invitational set for Sept. 18 in Kaneohe.
