Campbell rides runners
to a win over Kaiser

Championships are never won two games into the season. But the Campbell Sabers took a giant step toward one last night with their second Oahu Interscholastic Association White win against no losses.

Jesse Lee's 5-yard touchdown run with 2:44 left capped a nine-play, 96-yard drive that showcased the Sabers' dominant running game and provided the difference in a 28-21 victory over the host Kaiser Cougars last night.

Isiah Smith finished with 141 rushing yards and Kaneala Stanton added 128 as the Sabers (2-1 overall) finished with 433 rushing yards. Lee scored two touchdowns.

The Cougars (1-1, 1-2) mounted a late charge, but Steven Pratt's pass fell incomplete on fourth-and-1 with a minute left and the Sabers ran out the clock.

Campbell struck first, as quarterback Shaye Asoau's 1-yard sneak gave the Sabers a 7-0 lead. The quick-strike Cougars offense responded immediately. Kaiser quarterback Shannon Wise hit Matt Ching with a 68-yard TD pass on the first play of the ensuing drive to tie it.

The Cougars scored again early in the second quarter on a third-and-goal play with Wise getting a key block from Rusty Laboy. Wise scrambled in from 14 yards for a 14-7 lead.

The Sabers then got a 32-yard pass play from Asoau to Isaac Laupola, setting up a 2-yard TD run by Lee. The halftime score was 14-all.

Quinton Richards scored on a 5-yard run with 3:29 left in the third, putting the Sabers back in front 21-14.

Once again, though, the Cougars fired right back. Steele Legros hauled in a 9-yard scoring pass from Pratt, evening the score again.
