Adleta named UH women's golf coach

Ashley Adleta has been hired as the University of Hawaii's full-time women's golf coach.

Adleta had been the interim coach since January and guided the Rainbow Wahine to a fifth-place finish at the Western Athletic Conference championship.

Adleta, 32, played on the 1993 and 1994 national championship teams at Arizona State. She was an administrative assistant with the championship squad of 1995 and served as assistant coach on the Sun Devil teams that won the 1997 and 1998 titles.

The Rainbow Wahine open the season Sept. 13-15 at the New Mexico Dick McGuire Invitational.

Maui Channel Swim set for Saturday

The Maui Channel Swim is scheduled to be held Saturday starting on Lanai and ending at the Kaanapali Beach Resort on Maui.

Relay teams consist of six members with each swimming half-hour legs until all members have had a turn. Each swimmer then takes 10-minute legs until the team completes the 9.5-mile swim.

Chaminade wins road match

Valasi Sepulona recorded 19 kills and Kahala Kabalis added 16 to lead the Chaminade volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Cal State-Dominguez Hills yesterday in Carson, Calif.

The Silverswords (2-0) lost the first game 30-18 but rebounded to win the next three 30-24, 30-24, 30-19. Patti Hardimon contributed 11 kills for Chaminade. CSDH (4-1) was led by Carol Hamilton's 10 kills.

Olympians to speak at library

Olympic gold medalists William Smith and Tommy Kono will be among the featured speakers at a program titled "Hawaiian Olympians: Legends of the Past," Sept. 9 at the Hawaii State Library.

Smith won a swimming gold in the 1948 games, and Kono was a gold medalist in weightlifting in 1952 and 1956. Scheduled to join them on the panel are Keala O'Sullivan Watson (1968 bronze medalist in diving), Chris Woo (1976 U.S. swimming team member), Kevin Asano (1988 silver medalist in judo) and boxer Brian Viloria, a member of the 2000 U.S. boxing team.

The two-hour program starts at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Goosen, Kelly sign on for Pro-Junior challenge

U.S Open champion Retief Goosen and 2002 Sony Open champion Jerry Kelly have committed to play in the 2005 First Hawaiian Bank Pro-Junior Golf Challenge at Waialae Country Club.

The event, set for Jan. 11, leads into the Sony Open in Hawaii. Goosen, Kelly and four other PGA golfers will be paired with six of Hawaii's top junior golfers in a six-hole team event. Kelly and Kellen Watabu of Kauai won last year's tournament.

The $25,000 purse will be split between the professional players and the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. The players will divide $13,000 with the other $12,000 going to the HSJGA.

The Sony Open in Hawaii will be held Jan. 13-16.
