Gear up for
neighbor isle events

If you're suffering from a bout of rock fever, it's a good time to consider visiting a less-crowded rock.

September is a busy time for dining extravaganzas on the neighbor islands, with four major events:

A Taste of Lahaina

More than 20 Maui restaurants will participate in this annual fund-raiser for various school organizations, 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 10 and 11 at Lahaina Recreation Center Park II.

Participating restaurants include: Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar, Big Wave Cafˇ, Alexander's Fish & Chips, Ashley's South Shore Cafˇ, Horhitos Mexican Cantina, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Cj's, Cool Cat Cafˇ, Gaby's Pizzeria, Kahuna Kabobs, Pacific'O, Roy's Kihei and Wow-Wee Maui's Kava Bar.

The concert event "Best of Island Music" goes on throughout the event, featuring Tapa Groove, Noland Conjugacion, Kapena, Uncle Richard Ho'opi'i, Nuff Sed and Ho'onua.

Lion's Feast

The Kona Lions Club plans a dinner to benefit Kona Community Hospital and other civic projects in West Hawaii, 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Ohana Keauhou Beach Resort.

Chefs from throughout the Kona and Kohala coasts will prepare a dinner of rack of lamb, prime rib, lobster and other seafood, meats and sides, plus fancy desserts.

The night includes a silent auction and entertainment by the Nahale Brothers.

Tickets are $50. Call (808) 328-2367.

Taste of the Hawaiian Range

Guest chefs take on the challenge of cooking with mutton, goat and venison --all from grass-fed animals raised on the Big Island, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

Familiar cuts of beef, pork, lamb and even vegetarian dishes are also on the menu, but the signature ingredient is Kohala mountain oysters.

Tickets for the all-you-can-eat feast are $25 in advance; $40 at the door. Call (808) 322-4892 or e-mail gfukumoto@hawaii.edu.

Poke weekend

The Aloha Festival's Poke Weekend takes place Sept. 25 and 26 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on the Big Island, beginning with the Poke Shoot-Out Invitational Golf Tournament on the first day.

Admission to the showcase event, the Poke Recipe Contest at 11 a.m. on the 26th, is $5, plus you must have an Aloha Festivals ribbon. Admission includes entertainment and tasting of the poke entries. Call (808) 880-3424.

If you're interested in entering the contest, deadline is Sept. 10. Details are posted at www.pokecontest.com, or call the number above.

Eat your veggies

Easy ways to incorporate vegetables and fruits in the diet is the topic of this month's free Vegetarian Society of Hawaii lecture, 7 p.m. next Wednesday at the Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse.

Dietitian Mary Arakaki and chef Raul Hayasaka from the Castle Wellness & Lifestyle Medicine Center will speak on "Vegetarian Cooking and Meal Planning."

The talk is meant for those simply interested in eating more fruits and veggies, as well as vegetarians and vegans and those making the transition to a meatless diet.

Samples will be served.
