Ritz-Carlton gets healthy for kids

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua has added "Healthy Taste" items to its children's menu, part of a movement throughout the international resort chain to address the junk-food habit among kids.

This menu cover was designed for the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua by Gladis Medina of King of Kamehameha III Elementary School.

The new keiki menu still includes the old favorites of macaroni and cheese, hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches but also includes grilled fish, teriyaki chicken strips, fruit cups and salads. The "Healthy Taste" choices tend to be pricier, though ($9 for fish compared with $5 for mac and cheese).

The menu features artwork by students from King Kamehameha III Elementary School in Lahaina. Gladis Medina and Latisha Cajudoy's drawings were selected from among 240 entries. Each winner received an overnight stay at the resort hotel and dinner in the Terrace restaurant.

Also introducing a new keiki menu is Auntie Pasto's in Honolulu. Mini pizzas, pasta with several toppings, macaroni and cheese are among the offerings, as well as kid-sized salads and desserts. The menu itself includes puzzles and games.
