PGA Grand Slam
of Golf moves back to
Thanksgiving week

The tournament, held at Kauai's Poipu
Bay Golf Course, returns to its original format

It's moving day for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

After last year's tournament was played the first weekend in December, the 22nd annual event returns to its original Monday-through-Wednesday format the week of Thanksgiving.

The four winners of the Grand Slam tourneys -- Phil Mickelson (Masters), Retief Goosen (U.S. Open), Todd Hamilton (British Open) and Vijay Singh (PGA) -- will play a two-day, 36-hole stroke-play event at the Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai. It is the 11th consecutive year that the Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa will host the made-for-TV match.

Prior to last year, Tiger Woods dominated the $1 million Grand Slam of Golf. It marks the second straight year that Woods is not playing the course he ruled from 1999 to 2002. He is 0-for-10 in majors since winning the 2002 U.S. Open.

Last year's U.S. Open winner, Jim Furyk, won't be around to defend his title, either. He beat Masters champion Mike Weir by eight strokes to pocket the $400,000 first prize. The other two competitors were Shaun Micheel and Ben Curtis.

This year's foursome is more familiar to the casual fan. Mickelson shed the title of "best golfer not to win a major" by holding off Ernie Els at the Masters for the famed green jacket.

Goosen battled fellow South African Els for three rounds at the U.S. Open before pulling away to win America's most coveted championship. Once again, Els was at the top of the leaderboard at the British Open, only to miss a short putt at the 18th , clearing the way for Hamilton to win in a playoff.

Singh, a regular at the Sony Open in Hawaii, is returning to Poipu Bay for the first time since winning the Masters in 2000.

After the Monday pro-am round, the four golfers will tee it up Tuesday, Nov. 23 for the first 18 holes. The final 18 will be played on Nov. 24. Both rounds will be shown on TNT. Tickets for the tournament can be purchased at 1-800-PGA-TCKT or online at www.PGA.com.
