Church offering aid for voice students

Church of the Crossroads gives tuition aid for voice students and gains new choir members in its annual $1,000 scholarship program.

Applications are being accepted from people who sing in the alto/mezzo-soprano and bass/baritone ranges. Applicants may be of any age and need not be majoring in music or even enrolled in college.

A scholarship recipient is required to participate in performances of the church choir and has opportunities to take soloist roles. Auditions will be held in September.

Information and application forms are available at the church, 1212 University Ave., 949-2220, or from music minister Don Conover, 256-7212.

Professor will speak on the origin of life

A nationally known speaker on the controversial topic of the origin of life will speak Wednesday at the University of Hawaii.

"Creation vs. Evolution: Why Both Sides Are Wrong" is the topic of Kenneth Miller, a professor of molecular biology at Brown University. He is the co-author of three biology textbooks widely used in high schools and universities.

The lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the UH Art Auditorium is sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Faculty and Staff. It is free and open to the public.

Miller is the author of "Finding Darwin's God: A Scientist's Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution." In it he wrote, "Every step of our understanding of the natural world is a step toward God."

Miller will speak at an October symposium on "Evolution and God, 150 Years of Conflict Between Science and Religion" at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Churches sponsor fest at Campbell campus

Entertainment by Christian music groups, bouncers and other games for children, and a sale of food and crafts will be happening this afternoon at a festival at Campbell High School campus in Ewa Beach.

The "96706: United in Prayer" event, sponsored by 14 Christian churches in the area, will be from 3 to 8 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

The focus of the ecumenical fun day is prayer, said spokeswoman Kymberly Pine. "All the churches share concern for the community problems such as drug abuse and teen truancy. We've tried everything else. It's time for prayer."

Messages and prayers will be offered by pastors and members from participating congregations: Anuenue Christian Church, Calvary Chapel West Oahu, Church of the Nazarene, Ewa Community Church, Gospel Lighthouse, Hawaii Fellowship of the Universal World Church, Hope Chapel Manoa, Hope Chapel Westside, Immaculate Conception Church, Koinonia Christian Center, Lighthouse Outreach Assembly of God, Message of Peace Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and St. Nicholas Episcopal Church.

Audit monitoring abuse reforms begins

WASHINGTON >> The second annual audit of U.S. Roman Catholic dioceses' compliance with nationwide sex abuse reforms the bishops approved in 2002 has begun with small changes from the 2003 round.

A fact sheet from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said victim advocacy groups with complaints should send information to the Gavin Group of Winthrop, Mass., which is doing the on-site audits in all American dioceses. Last year, information went first to the bishops' Office of Child and Youth Protection.

Dioceses will be given results of their audit within two weeks of completion rather than waiting for all audits to be conducted. And they will be asked the total of allegations in the year since the last audit, updating the data on allegations from 1950 to 2002 reported in February.

The bishops' office said a final report and details on each diocese would be finished by February and released publicly.
