The first place winner in the two-dimensional category of the "Commitment to Excellence" exhibit is Linda Kane's charcoal on paper "Ka Wao Kele 'o Wa'ahila."

Commit some time
to examine ‘Excellence’

For one all-too-brief moment, the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce's 26th annual "Commitment to Excellence" show appears, then disappears, this year after a mere 10-day run ending tomorrow. But the exhibition, one of Oahu's premiere showcases for Hawaii artists, is not to be missed.

Sponsored in part by the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and on view at the Academy Art Center at Linekona School, the exhibition features two- and three-dimensional works by 40 local artists and 18 invited artists.

"The exhibit keeps getting better year after year," said Stanley Yamamoto, art exhibition chairperson, a retired arts educator who hopes the show will "inspire the next generation."

The works displayed were selected by a two six-person committees out of 650 entries submitted.

In addition to the juried pieces, the show includes works by this year's invited artists: Reiko Brandon, Sean Browne, Satoko Dung, Dorothy Faison, Charles Higa, Anne Irons, John Koga, David Kuraoka, Rochelle Lum, Hanae and Rick Mills, Mary Mitsuda, John Morita, Fred Roster, Stan Tomita, Cora Yee and Doug Young.

The show can be viewed 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and tomorrow at 1111 Victoria St. For more information, contact HJCC at 949-5531.

Cash prizes were awarded in both categories for first, second and third place, honorable mention and a newcomer award for the best new artist.
