Tasty talent on display
at ‘Mixed Plate’ show

'BABES" IN ACTION: Katie Leiva has yet to headline a show on Broadway, but the Po'okela Award-winner's sizzling rendition of "Let Me Entertain You" was one of the highlights of the Honolulu Broadway Babies' production of "Broadway Mixed Plate 2004" at Leeward Community College on Sunday. Leiva radiated charisma and G-rated sex appeal in a slinky black gown and matching formal gloves. Other stellar musical performances included Bonifacio "Bones" Deoso Jr.'s beautiful treatment of "Bring Him Home," Marc Dalio's powerful renditions of "This is the Moment" and "If I Can't Love Her," and Gavin Vinta's moving take on "Empty Chairs." A rewriting of "Roxie" to showcase the talents of Joan Almedilla, Audri T. Dalio, Trisha Mae Banquerigo and producer/director Kristian Lei, worked surprisingly well and allowed for some inside jokes about Lea Salonga, but a localized version of "Cell Block Tango" substituted cheap laughs and ethnic stereotypes for the sardonic humor of the original ...

INTERESTING PEOPLE: Bob McClurg, in town promoting his new book, "Diggers, Funnies, Gassers & Altereds," a photo history of drag racing's Golden Age, took his first drag racing photo when he was a teen, and recalls being promptly escorted away by track officials because he had no press credentials. McClurg spent some time as a conventional photo-journalist but soon decided to concentrate on cars and racing. His book is a fascinating and detailed history of a uniquely American sport ... Leni Knight wondered if she was being stalked by the "strange man" taking pictures of her at Leeward Community College on Sunday. It wasn't until he introduced himself that she saw it was her brother, Las Vegas chef Levy Acosta Jr., who'd flown home for a surprise visit for the first time in years ... "North Shore" star Jason Momoa stopped by the W on Friday to congratulate Komo Low and Matty "Matty Boy" Hazelgrove on the 4th anniversary of the Wonderlounge, and partied quietly with Peter Maharaj and a small entourage at the Hanohano Room on Saturday ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: To Elizabeth Ananij Harrison and Alicia Michioka Jones, who are celebrating today ... Also to Jakara Mato (Sunday), Dave Toma (Tuesday), and Taylor Dunham and Kent Ghirard (Wednesday) ...

"ISM" GOES POLYNESIAN: Choreographer/storytellers Tanui Tully and Chris Ramento are the key players as "ISM" returns to the Jazz Loft at 226 Lewers St. with Polynesian-themed entertainment tonight at 9. Validated parking is available a few blocks away in the Planet Hollywood building. A $10 cover kicks in at 10 ...
