‘Hawaii’ boosts Sumika’s role

Aya Sumika, who plays Honolulu Metro Police officer Linh Dias on NBC's cop drama "Hawaii," will get some major air time in the coming weeks. In episode five, "Outbound," she's promoted to detective in a move sources said could give her the major secondary storylines.

The show's writers are still trying to find a love interest for top cop Sean Harrison (Michael Biehn). Early episodes with a medical examiner didn't generate the right chemistry.

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, who plays Capt. Terry Harada, also is getting more air time. In episode four, "Underground," Tagawa leaves the precinct to join detectives Biehn and Sharif Atkins at a bank robbery crime scene.

The syndicated entertainment news show "Extra" is coming to town to help promote "Hawaii." Sumika will be filmed Sunday getting a treatment at SpaHalekulani, and earlier that day, some 40 cast and family members, producers and NBC execs will brunch at the hotel's La Mer restaurant.

It's all part of the show's Sunset on the Beach premiere and celebration Sunday night. Network execs attending the gala will include Angela Bromsted, president of NBC Universal Television Studio; Lauren Stein, NBC Director of Primetime Series; Curt King, VP of NBC Publicity; Edwin Chung, NBC Director of Current Programming and Jamie French, NBC Publicity. NBC Universal TV Group president Jeff Zucker has not been confirmed.

"Extra" also is doing a story on co-star Eric Balfour's band Fredalba, which performs at Wave Waikiki Saturday ...

And, not to be outdone, ABC's "Lost" will premiere at Saturday night's Sunset on the Beach, with cast members and producers attending ...

Travis Fimmel will co-star in the WB's midseason drama pilot "Rocky Point." Also joining the cast: Moon Bloodgood, Beau Garrett and John Patrick Amedori. "Rocky Point" centers on Cassie (Chyler Leigh), a young woman living on the North Shore who takes in her estranged father (Billy Campbell). Fimmel plays Cassie's boyfriend, a professional surfer, and Bloodgood and Garrett play Cassie's friends and roommates. Lauren Holly plays Susan, the girls' landlord and a New York attorney who recently moved to Hawaii. Amedori will play her son, a karate enthusiast ...

Fox's "North Shore" continues using the Turtle Bay Resort pool for the fictitious Grand Waimea hotel. Building a pool set has been considered too expensive, unless the show gets picked up for a second season. Look for promotional Web site and program credit tie-ins between Fox and the resort ...
