Hit parade at Rumours

Dozens of former beauty queens will gather at Ala Moana Hotel's Rumours nightclub Wednesday for the third Yun Tau Zane Scholarship Fund patriotic fund-raiser, "Hit Parade: Miss Hawaii's Tribute to the '40s and '50s, honoring those in the armed services.

Rumours will be transformed into a classic USO canteen lounge as guests enjoy themed beverages, gourmet delicacies and a concert of swing medleys, hula and patriotic classics performed by former Miss Hawaii winners including Denby Dung, Cathy Foy-Mahi, Candes Gentry, Debbie Nakanelua-Richards, Beverly Noa and Traci Toguchi.

Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Guests with a military I.D. and children ages 4 to 12 will pay $10. Keiki age 3 and under will be admitted free. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Call 591-9339.

Alzheimer's walk set

The Alzheimer's Association's 2004 Memory Walk/5K Run for Alzheimer's disease will be held Saturday at Ala Moana Beach Park.

More than 1,500 people are expected to participate in the annual event to raise funds and promote the progress surrounding Alzheimer's. Money raised will stay in Hawaii to provide help to the 27,000 individuals with Alzheimer's disease in Hawaii, their families and caregivers.

Registration starts at 6 a.m., with opening ceremony at 6:45 a.m. The run/walk begins at 7 a.m. The race begins at Fisherman's Wharf, circles Ala Moana Beach Park, part of Magic Island and ends back at Fisherman's Wharf, with post-event activities to take place at Ward Warehouse.

To register or make a donation, visit www.alzhi.org or call 591-2771. The event is the largest national fundraising event for Alzheimer's disease support programs and is held in 680 communities nationwide.

Art of cloisonnŽ

Far Eastern Furnishings Hawaii will host a free cloisonnŽ demonstration from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday.

Kazuko Inomata will share her expertise in enamel inlay artistry. She is a graduate of the Naniwa Fine Arts College in Osaka, Japan, and has been a member of the Japan Enameling Artist Association since 1975. She currently serves on its Board of Directors and has taught cloisonnŽ technique through workshops at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Counting on dads

Hawaii Coalition for Dads presents "Na Po'okela No Na Keiki," an inspirational clinic for dads, Sept. 4 at the University of Hawaii Stan Sheriff Center.

Subtitled "Champions for Children and Youth: Where Winning Counts the Most," the clinic for men, coaches and community leaders, with the goal of raising healthy children, takes place 7:30 to 11:15 a.m. in the Ed Wong Hospitality Suite.

Kimo Kahoano will be the emcee at the event, which features former Farrington High football coach Skippa Diaz; Kauai community coach Bernard Carvalho; and D.J. Vanas, a Native American motivational storyteller and success coach who uses warrior concepts and wisdom to inspire others.

The cost, including breakfast, is $10 per person, and each participant will receive football tickets -- for one adult and one child -- for the season opener of UH vs. Florida Atlantic.

Postcard art contest

Hawaii Tokai International College is inviting all Hawaii residents ages 60 and older to participate in the 16th Shizuoka Friendship Postcard Art Competition.

The contest's intent is to foster friendship between the people of Hawaii and Japan through art exchanges.

There are four categories: painting, collage, print and other (mixed media). No three-dimensional work will be accepted.

Artwork will be judged on originality and creativity. Entries must be postmarked by Sept. 20, 2004. Include your name, address, age, title of piece and category of work on the back of the postcard. Collage entries should be placed in an envelope.
