Road safety conference
tomorrow

A joint city-state transportation summit to address safety issues will be held tomorrow in view of several major traffic accidents.

The meeting, "A Community Conversation on Roadway Safety," will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Pikake Room of the Neal Blaisdell Center.

Nestor Garcia, chairman of the Honolulu City Council's Transportation Committee, said he had raised the subject earlier this year with the city's Department of Transportation Services and the state Department of Transportation. The summit will be a continuation of the discussion, giving government, law enforcement, business and community representatives to interact in an informal atmosphere.

Garcia's committee had held hearings several highway fatalities, including the February incident in which two racing cars collided with a truck on the H-1 freeway near Waipahu, killing four people.

Street racing killed two people and caused three injuries in Ala Moana in October. In December, four people were killed and three injured in Makaha.

Participants should register with Garcia's office at 547-7009. Parking at the Blaisdell is $4 for four hours.
