Banyan Veranda to feature Okinawa

The foods of Okinawa will be celebrated in a special seven-course menu, Wednesday through Sunday at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider's Banyan Veranda.

The dining event, Kariyushi Matsuri, precedes the Okinawan Festival, which takes place Labor Day weekend.

Guest chef Masaru "Steve" of Restaurant Izakaya Hatsune-ya has prepared a menu of traditional dishes: Goya/Shiquasa Juice and Pickled Green Papaya, Chilled Togan Soup, Rafute (Okinawan-style shoyu pork), Tofu Dango (deep-fried tofu with ground chicken and vegetables), Duruwakashi (Chinese taro), Mimigar (sliced pig ears with cucumber and miso) and entree choice of petite filet, chicken or fish with stuffed goya (bittermelon). Dessert is Okinawan Cheesecake.

Ryukyu-koku Matsuri Daiko in Hawaii, an Okinawan taiko drum and dance group, will perform at 7 p.m. Friday and Sunday.

Cost is $52. Seating times are 5:30 to 9 p.m. A modified regular dinner menu will also be available.

Also at the Sheraton Moana, the Beachside Cafˇ will offer two Okinawan dishes, Yakisoba and Goya Champuru (sautˇed bittermelon with tofu and tuna) on its buffet line. Dinner buffet price is $35.

Both restaurants will be featuring Okinawan beer and sake.

Bistro flavors

Gros Bonnet Culinary Academy opens its doors to the public Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, offering a buffet of European bistro specialties with an emphasis on France.

The cooking school, at 1431 S. Beretania St., is hosting the Bistro Flavors Grand Buffet as a benefit for the Gordy Dambach Culinary Scholarship Fund.

Cost is $23.95 for lunch (11:30 a.m.) and $29.95 for dinner (6 p.m.). Call 944-2770. You may bring your own wine.

Special events

Four for 40: Pagoda Floating Restaurant celebrates its 40th anniversary with a weekday lunch buffet special -- $40 for four adults. The menu includes tempura and catch of the day; sushi, salad and appetizer bars; ice cream station and desserts. Daily specials are crab legs (Monday), oxtail soup (Tuesday), butterfish misoyaki (Wednesday), mixed plate (Thursday) and Hawaiian plate (Friday). The special runs through Nov. 30 and is good for parties of up to 12. Call 941-6611.

Ports!: Ports from Portugal will be featured at a wine tasting, 6 p.m. Tuesday at Indigo Euro Bistro. Cost is 20. Call 521-2900.
