Waikiki Yacht Club
holding 60th birthday
party today


The Waikiki Yacht Club is celebrating its 60th birthday today. George Over Jr. was the driving force in founding the club and was its first commodore. The original Board of Directors included Duke Kahanamoku and Dick Soelberg, with other key roles played by John Child, Bob Miller, Art Myhre and Guy Rothwell. Things get under way today with pupus at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30. Tickets are $20 and $10 for youngsters 6 to 10. Non-members are welcome. Call 955-4405 for tickets. ...

The Star-Bulletin and MidWeek are among sponsors of Duke's Hoolaulea this weekend and Aug. 24, the Olympic great's 114th birthday. Brunch on the Beach tomorrow, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Waikiki will be a highlight. Taking part in the brunch festivities will be the Royal Hawaiian Band, under the baton of Aaron Mahi, at 9:30 a.m. Danny Kaleikini headlines a show dedicated to Duke 12:30 p.m. In between, the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiian Ensemble under Kaleo Trinidad and the Iliahi Trio will perform. More activities are taking place today and tomorrow at Waikiki Beach. Lei draping of Duke's statue at the beach is at 5 p.m. today ...

'Hawaii's Kitchen' films DeAngelo, Viloria

Tiki's Grill and Bar, the Hawaii Prince and the Ilikai hotels are providing food for Sunday's Brunch on the Beach. Tiki's Executive Chef Fred DeAngelo and Pastry Chef Ron Viloria are taping a segment for KHON's "Hawaii Kitchen" at 2 p.m. today at the Made in Hawaii Festival in the Blaisdell Center Arena. They will prepare 5-Spiced Seared Scallops and Roasted Maui Pineapple-Basil Macaroon Tart. Other chefs giving demonstrations at the fest include Richard Chung of Food Solutions International with Dr. Terry Shintani, Elmer Guzman of Sam Choy's at Diamond Head, Eric Leterc of the Pacific Club and Grant Sato of Culinary Institute of the Pacific at Kapiolani Community College. "Hawaii's Kitchen" is shown by KHON Sundays at 5 p.m. ...

George Winston gives a piano concert tomorrow, 7 p.m., in Orvis Auditorium to benefit the UH Music Department. Call 956-7756 for $40 tickets. Winston supports food banks and asks concert-goers to bring canned foods to the show for the Hawaii Food Bank. That's pretty nice of George ... Sen. Dan Inouye, an honorary Samoan high talking chief, will speak at the Samoan Service Providers banquet today at Kuhio Park Terrace Gym ...
