holding 60th birthday
The Waikiki Yacht Club is celebrating its 60th birthday today. George Over Jr. was the driving force in founding the club and was its first commodore. The original Board of Directors included Duke Kahanamoku and Dick Soelberg, with other key roles played by John Child, Bob Miller, Art Myhre and Guy Rothwell. Things get under way today with pupus at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30. Tickets are $20 and $10 for youngsters 6 to 10. Non-members are welcome. Call 955-4405 for tickets. ...
The Star-Bulletin and MidWeek are among sponsors of Duke's Hoolaulea this weekend and Aug. 24, the Olympic great's 114th birthday. Brunch on the Beach tomorrow, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Waikiki will be a highlight. Taking part in the brunch festivities will be the Royal Hawaiian Band, under the baton of Aaron Mahi, at 9:30 a.m. Danny Kaleikini headlines a show dedicated to Duke 12:30 p.m. In between, the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiian Ensemble under Kaleo Trinidad and the Iliahi Trio will perform.
