Red Cross needs help for hurricane victims

The American Red Cross is seeking donations to help those affected by Hurricane Charley, which ripped through Florida last week leaving 23 dead and nearly 50,000 homeless.

So far, residents in the islands have donated about $700 to the effort through the Red Cross of Hawaii.

Officials say more money is needed to meet a growing demand for hot meals, water, shelter and supplies.

Charley has caused an estimated $7.4 billion in damage, officials say.

To help victims of Charley, contact the Red Cross of Hawaii at 734-2101.

Donations can also be made to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by calling 800-435-7669 (800-HELP-NOW).

Internet users can contribute online at www.redcross.org.

Memorial services for officer Tuesday

Memorial services have been set for the Wahiawa police officer who was killed Monday night on the H-2 freeway.

Officer Issac "Ike" Veal died after the sport utility vehicle he was driving rolled over several times while he was responding to a call about a fight.

Services are scheduled for Borthwick Mortuary, Mauka/Makua Chapel, on Tuesday.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m., with services starting at 7 p.m.

On Wednesday a police motorcade from the mortuary will pass police headquarters on Beretania Street and continue on to Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneohe. The motorcade will begin at 10 a.m., followed by graveside services at 11 a.m.

Police said yesterday the 58-year-old Wahiawa officer did not appear to be wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

“Based on the investigation so far, it appears Officer IssacVeal was not wearing a seat belt,” Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman Michelle Yu said.

Emergency vehicle operators, including police officers, are not required to wear seat belts while on duty, according to state law.

HPD arrests suspects in alleged Ala Moana gun threat

Police arrested two teenage boys, 13 and 15, and a 22-year-old man who allegedly used a stolen handgun to threaten a group of youths in the Ala Moana area on Wednesday.

When police arrived shortly after 2 p.m., the suspects had already fled. Police interviewed several witnesses who told them that one male pointed a handgun at the group and threatened to kill them all.

About two hours later, the victims spotted the suspects in a nearby restaurant and again called police.

Officers detained the suspects and learned two of them were suspects in two separate threatening cases involving the same handgun. Police recovered the handgun, which was stolen last year from a home.

Police nab 2 in alleged bank fraud scheme

Police arrested a 37-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman for suspicion of second-degree forgery after they allegedly used stolen and forged checks to open a joint checking and savings account on Aug. 6 at a Downtown bank.

Police said the checks were put on hold for a few days, and when the male suspect went to the bank Wednesday to withdraw money from the new checking account, police were called.

Police found the woman at another location and arrested her.

Scam targets seniors with lure of winnings

CrimeStoppers, police, the Better Business Bureau and the Hawaii Bankers Association are warning of a scam targeting seniors.

A 78-year-old Aiea woman got a call Wednesday that she had won $750,000 from the Consumers Group of Las Vegas.

To collect her prize, she was told to pay a $3,000 cash processing fee, which would be picked up from her home. The caller gave the resident's address and said that staff would pick up the money later that morning.

The woman received another call shortly thereafter saying she could get $11,000 worth of Caribbean travel for $498. The caller asked for her bank account and routing number to make an electronic charge, which the woman provided.

The woman got another call from the so-called Consumers Group to confirm the money pickup. When she said she did not have the cash and wanted to write a check, the caller hung up.

Police were able to cancel the electronic charge and have the account flagged.

Police are warning the public to beware of anyone asking for bank records, credit card numbers or money to be wired for electronic charges, and to never divulge personal information to anyone over the phone. Always check on an offer that sounds too good to be true, police said.

2 girls accuse man of repeated assaults

Police arrested a 34-year-old Ewa Beach man who allegedly sexually assaulted two girls, 14 and 8, for nearly three years.

The girls disclosed that the suspect had sexual contact with them from Nov. 24, 2000, to March 31.

The suspect was arrested for suspicion of third-degree sexual assault. He was later released pending further investigation.

HPD investigates injury to infant girl

Police are investigating a possible second-degree assault case involving a 6-month-old girl in Ewa Beach.

Police said the baby was taken to the hospital at 8 p.m. Saturday with suspicious injuries to her left leg. No other details were released.
