Arceneaux, Naehu named af2 All-Stars

Hawaiian Islanders special teams standouts Anthony Arceneaux and Kimo Naehu were named to the all-arenafootball2 team yesterday.

Arceneaux was named the first-team National Conference pick as a special teams player selection. He finished second in af2 in kickoff returns with an average of 27.3 yards per return and tied a league record by returning three kickoffs for touchdowns against San Diego on May 28.

Arceneaux also set Islanders records for total touchdowns (32), points (194) and all-purpose yards (2,014).

Naehu was the second-team kicker in the National Conference. He was 83-for-107 in extra points and was third on the team in scoring with 98 points.

Former University of Hawaii receiver Dwight Carter was a second-team pick as a receiver/defensive back for the San Diego Riptide. Carter caught 104 passes for 1,345 yards and 23 touchdowns for the Riptide.

Rainbows get official paperwork on 2 guards

The Hawaii basketball team officially filled their void at point guard.

Signed scholarship agreements from Kris Groce and Deonte Tatum arrived at the coaches office this week, making them the fourth and fifth players to sign with the Rainbow Warriors for next season.

Groce, a 5-foot-9 point guard from Columbia Basin (Wash.) College, will have three years of eligibility.

"Kris is a very quick player who has good floor leadership," UH head coach Riley Wallace said.

Wallace called the 6-2 Tatum "a very physical player.' Tatum, who averaged 8.4 points and 4.8 assists at Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College, will have two seasons of eligibility.

Schedule shuffle: UH's Western Athletic Conference road games at Tulsa and Rice have been shifted over by a day. Instead of playing the traditional Thursday-Saturday time slot, the Rainbows will play Tulsa on Friday Feb. 25 and Rice on Sunday Feb. 27.

9th Pigskin Pigout fund-raiser tomorrow

Some 200 silent and live auction items ranging from vacations to sports memorabilia to gift certificates will be available at the 9th Murphy's Warrior Pigskin Pigout tomorrow.

The fund-raiser for the Hawaii football program begins at 5:30 p.m. on Merchant Street and Murphy's Bar & Grill. Among the more creative items is a home building package that includes concrete, flooring and roofing materials.

Tickets for the hosted evening are $100 and available at Murphy's. For information, call 531-0422.

Pearl City juniors still unbeaten

Pearl City defeated Fort Worth Texas, 3-1, yesterday to improve to 3-0 in pool play at the Junior League World Series (13-14) of baseball tournament at Taylor, Michigan.

Pearl City will take on Tampa, Fla., tomorrow to conclude pool play. The Hawaii team has all but clinched a berth in Friday's U.S. final, which pits the top two American teams.

Bryson Nakamura tossed a three-hitter. Ryne Acosta, Jordan Casarez and Alika Pruett all drove in runs for Pearl City.

The U.S. winner takes on the International champion in Saturday's final televised on ESPN. (1 p.m. HST).

Converse Open kicks off Duke celebration

The best longboarders from Hawaii, California and the East Coast will compete in the $26,000 Converse Hawaii Open surf championships at Queens Surf, Kuhio Beach beginning tomorrow.

The three-day event kicks off the Duke Kahanamoku Ho'olaule'a, a celebration of the life and legacy of Hawaii's greatest Olympian, considered the father of modern surfing. The contest is the third of four events on the U.S. Professional Longboard Surfing Championships, the only series in the world in which both men and women surfers compete at the same place and equal prize money.

Among those entered from Hawaii are Dino Miranda, Rusty Keaulana, Desiree DeSoto and Joy Magelssen. The contest runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Friday and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
