29TH INFANTRY BRIGADE REPORTS FOR DUTY

UH to refund tuition
for call-up absences

As many as 300 University of Hawaii students might be affected by the Hawaii National Guard call-up, but UH officials say that the citizen soldiers will not lose the money they paid for tuition and other costs.

University of Hawaii University officials announced yesterday that it refunds fees paid by military personnel when their academic plans are interrupted by military assignment.

About 300 students enrolled at university or community college campuses are in the Hawaii National Guard, said UH spokeswoman Carolyn Tanaka. It is not known how many of those citizen soldiers have been called to active duty, she said. The UH system, which includes 10 campuses, has an enrollment of about 50,000 students.

The policy of full refund of tuition and mandatory fees applies to U.S. military personnel on active duty and their dependents enrolled in the fall semester and extension term.

Hawaii National Guard and military reservists are eligible, but not their dependents.

Deployed students who have paid fees for services such as residence hall or child care will receive a prorated refund as set by each campus.

"The University of Hawaii supports all or our faculty, staff and students who have been affected by military deployments overseas," said acting UH President David McClain. "Students ... will not be penalized for being unable to complete their course requirements as a result of military deployment."
