Hawaii Beat

605-pounder gives Aussie lead in HIBT

KAILUA-KONA » Brad Bobbermien's nearly four-hour fight resulted in a 605 1/2 pound blue marlin, and his two catches resulted in 1,007 points and the lead yesterday at the 45th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.

"It was a good fight," Bobbermien said. "She went down and came up just once. I thought it was a 400-pounder."

The catch was good for 100 extra points as the largest weighed catch of the day, 100 more for reeling in a fish greater than 500 pounds and a one-third bonus for using a lighter 50-pound test line.

It was the second of a double strike that occurred for Bobbermien almost simultaneously yesterday morning aboard the Foxy Lady just north of Kailua Bay.

The two fish he hooked were "definitely traveling together," the Australian big game fishing charter captain said.

His South Australia team seized first place in the standings, followed by Team Wasasa of the Bahamas and the Malindi Sea Fishing Club of Kenya, tied for second place with 600 points each.
