Great Harvest Bread Co.'s doggie treats are made with whole wheat.

Through August, the Kahala bakery is donating half the proceeds from its sales of dog treats (six for $4.95) to the humane society.

Bakery owner Adam Wong says the bone-shaped dog treats are made from a secret recipe of ground whole wheat, garlic and beef bouillon.

The store is located across Kalanianaole Highway from Kahala Mall, next to Star of the Sea school. Call 735-8810.

Ready for a closeup?

You've been reading about the new television series "Hawaii" and its stars, but ever thought you could be one? Producers are looking for people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds to be part of the police drama premiering this fall, so an open casting call will take place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Windward Mall Center Stage.

"We want the show to reflect the true diversity of the people here, so we're going directly into the local communities," said casting director Cathy Reinking.

"NBC is committed to growing the local pool of talent, both on and off-screen," added executive producer Jeff Eastin ("True Lies 2" and "Rush Hour 3").

No experience is necessary. Bring a photo (and portfolio) if you have one. If you do not, the casting crew will take a photo for you. No phone calls, please.

The series will debut nationally on Sept. 1. A special premiere screening is slated to take place in the open air at Sunset on the Beach in Waikiki on Aug. 29. Stay tuned for details.

Barbie's kept up with the times for 45 years

Since her birth in 1959, Barbie's been alternately admired and reviled. She's been the source of feminist rancor due to her physical dimensions, which critics say represents an ideal impossible for real women to emulate. Of course we really can't blame the poor old girl for having been molded that way.

Those who get past the curves will see Barbie's strength and resilience. Knock her down and she pops back up, having discovered the power of reinvention long before Madonna (or is it Esther)?

Barbie's been a cheerleader and supermodel. When feminists cry foul, she shows her brainier side, turning astronaut or doctor, nimbly negotiating the politics of the day. (Listen up John Kerry!)

In honor of Barbie's 45th anniversary, Hallmark Gold Crown stores are offering an anniversary collection of retro-themed products featuring black-and-white fashion images, including porcelain coffee mugs ($7.95), dessert plates ($24.95 for a set of four in a hat box), party glasses ($24.95 for four) and gift cards ($2.99 to $3.49) celebrating friendship. Look for wrapping paper and gift bags as well.

Look for the stores at Ala Moana, Kahala Mall, Pearlridge and Windward Mall shopping centers.
