Carll leads club pro championship

Ko Olina head pro Kevin Carll birdied the first five holes en route to a 3-under 69 and the first-round lead of the Aloha Section PGA Club Professional Championship yesterday at The Experience at Koele, Lanai.

Carll had a one-shot lead over host pro Brendan Moynahan and Makena's Brian Sasada going into today's final round. Also in contention are Oahu Country Club's Andrew Feldmann (71), Kukio's Matt Pakkala (71) and defending champion John Lynch of Ko'lau (72).

The top-six finishers will represent Hawaii at the Western Regionals in October in Patterson, Calif. The top finishers of the regional advance to the national event next June in Ohio.

Fish win first day of Billfish tournament

Five teams are tied for first place after the first day of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament yesterday at Kailua-Kona.

Although there were plenty of strikes, no blue marlin made it to shore. Five fish were caught, but they were tagged and released because they weighed less than 300 pounds. That created a 5-way tie for first among Brian Reece of Kenya, Akira Watanabe of Japan, Jay Gilleece III of North Carolina, Rick Benitez of the Bahamas and K. Neil Patrick of Australia.

The event ends Friday.

Pearl City falls into regional semifinals

Montana's Alex Bushman threw a complete game one-hitter and benefited from five Hawaii errors as Montana beat Pearl City 6-0 in Little League's West Region tournament at Forest Grove, Ore., yesterday.

It was Pearl City's only loss in pool play, allowing it to begin the semifinal round as the top seed against Alaska. Northern California plays Arizona in the other semifinal. The championship is tomorrow with the winner advancing to the Junior World Series at Taylor, Mich.

Slots open for HSWGA senior tournament

Openings are available for the 26th Hawaii State Women's Golf Association's Senior Championship, Aug. 30, at the Waikele Golf Club.

The event is open to all HSWGA members, 50 years of age and older. The cost is $75 and includes green fees, art, awards and buffet luncheon.

Among those entered are defending champion Marcie Rudich and previous winners Mona Kim-Lee and Bev Kim. For more information, call Sheila Kim at 623-1244.
